The first thing to observe is how the candidate performs tasks when assigned and how they report on these tasks including how the replication steps are documented, the methods used, their regular practice of implementing security precautions, monitoring, and reporting structures, discipline, patience, and behavior. For me, if all elements are in balance, it represents the perfect combination of technical skills.

Therefore, the architecture will reflect good practices and contain effective policies and processes which respect the right and privacy of each users interacting in the environment.

When recruiting cybersecurity architects I like to look for well rounded folks with a background in different cybersecurity disciplines (IAM, engineering, incident response, etc). That does’t mean that they are not subject matter experts in one or more disciplines, but that they have solid exposure across the board to help them see the bigger picture. My experience with folks that want to be architects are that they are often “puffy cloud” thinkers and create theoretical designs for the perfect potential solution; versus practical thinkers that create optimal solutions under the real world circumstances that they are working with.
