As a successful Business Analyst, First we need to get the full list of stakeholders (Business people and their roles, scrum team, integrated teams etc) to interact with to gather requirements. Then we need to understand the needs of the business and document the same. The skill we need is, how we articulate the needs into user stories with AS-IS , TO-BE process flows which is understood by the scrum team. Help testers on various scenarios to be covered as part of regression and progression to provide the users a bug free applications. Consider all the risks and regulatory requirements.

1st and most important: Be nice and humble. You will annoy people with questions over and over. You need to make them work for YOU and at same time they need to be happy about it. You can have all the tools and certs (workflows, bpm, requirements mastering, ALL the goods) but if you are not good with people, that's it!.. For me... being a good BA starts with being good with PEOPLE and talk people language for then transform into something else....... 2nd... do your job. Understand the context of what you are doing. Do a double click on everything you find. Challenge and ask why many times. Be a good communicator. Be curious. Be friendly. Be techy with tech people... be people with people people. I have recently completed CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) Course. I learned a lot about the tested, tried, verified and internationally recognized proprocesses, procedures practices collaborated and trained under the purview of the guiding Institution (IIBA-Canada). The course covers those 6 main Knowledge Areas. Additionally, a BA require common sense to handle tough/awkward situations. My personal management experience strongly advocates applying common sense while maintaining all compliances and regulations as needed. Difference phases of any largescale project can be handled satisfactorily, meeting the goals of all stakeholders. Thus, referring to the heading, one requires command on all Knowledge Areas + common sense.

This is possibly the most important delivery of a BA. In my experience, below are the skills you need to elicit requirements: 1. Stakeholder management: stakeholders are the main source of requirements. you need to build a rapport for them to dedicate time and give you useful information. You also need to be on top on time/people management when you run workshops so your workshops achieve their goals, and you get quality clear requirements. 2. Observation and attention to details: you need to be strategic in your observations, look at the same requirement from different perspectives. You also need to be able to zoom in into details through SMART as well as zoom out to ensure the requirement fits the big picture and is prioritised properly.

To succeed as a Business Analyst, essential skills include strong communication for effective collaboration, critical thinking to analyze complex problems, adaptability to navigate changing requirements, data analysis proficiency, and a solid understanding of business processes. Additionally, stakeholder management and documentation skills are crucial for successful project outcomes.

In today's dynamic business environment, the role of a BA is pivotal due to their responsibility for accurately capturing and analyzing business requirements. This accuracy is crucial for clearing expectations, guiding project delivery, ensuring clear communication between stakeholders and project teams, and enabling informed decision-making. By serving as the bridge between business needs and project outcomes, skilled BA play a vital role in driving organizational success and achieving sustainable growth.

Whiteboard simplification 7. Use cases and scenarios 8. Risk analysis To confirm and prioritize requirements: 1. Paraphrase requirements to users 2. Classify requirements - Functional / Non functional / Unconfirmed / Unknown. 3. Document them - BRD, FRD, User stories, etc 4. Ensure requirements can deliver one or many objectives. 5. Prioritize - MoSCoW, Risk/Value, 20/20 Technique 6. Ensure the requirements pass the SMART test. 7. Ensure alignment to scope. 8. Formal sign-off.

Business analysts need a blend of technical and interpersonal skills. Key technical skills include data analysis (collect, clean, analyze, visualize), statistics, and proficiency in tools like SQL, Python, and Tableau. Soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and negotiation are crucial for interacting with stakeholders and driving solutions. Industry experience and knowledge of AI/machine learning can be an added bonus.

Analytical skills to interpret data, communication skills to collaborate with stakeholders, problem-solving skills to address business challenges, and attention to detail to ensure accuracy in your analysis.

Utilizing tools like spreadsheets, databases, and queries, analysts collect, manipulate, and visualize data to understand current states and identify gaps and opportunities. Additionally, they employ techniques such as data flow diagrams and entity-relationship diagrams to represent data structure and relationships. Through proficient data analysis and modeling, Business Analysts contribute to designing future project states and driving organizational success.

For a business analyst to succeed there are several essential skills to have: Time management and organization - a timeline to proactively engage or collaborate with stakeholders. Effective communication, Active listening Critical thinking and analytical skills to understand data or understand the business process. Business Acumen. Proactively engage the end users of the change of management requirements. It will provide understanding of the issues experienced and understand what can the change make it better. Stay curious and open to learn as business analysis its always changing.

In my experience, a lot of requirements hide in data and process flows, especially when you're dealing with data migrations or the flow of data between systems. Failure to map a data point or not account for a transformation of data can result in errors that are difficult to find and can delay testing and launch. You're not producing documentation just to produce documentation, or you shouldn't be. You're creating tools that others will depend upon to be able to do their job successfully.

Problem solving and critical thinking is one of the important quality of business analyst. He should understand and solve the problem which is fulfilling business criteria and feasible technically. Fishbone diagram is one of the technique for root cause analysis and problem solving.

For me, a business analyst should be in a position to simplify difficult sets of data and give to the stakeholder a clear message. If a 10 years old kid cannot understand the message, its complicated..  To do this, a business analyst should have critical thinking and know what they look for. Moreover, a business analyst should put him self in the shoes of the stakeholder that will see the analysis, whether he is a C-Level executive or just his boss, and try to understand the big picture.  Finally a business analyst should ask himself the "so what question". --> Why am I analysing this? Why I present this? So what if this figure is X or Y?  Easier said than done...

Thinking critically and creatively surely is important for a business analyst. But understand the underlying issue or processes might help a business analyst in the long run as the answer to the question/requirement might be the easiest there is. I always try to keep it to the simplest way as complex solution will require higher processing power/long time to process. Always keep it simple while trying to solve your business unit problem.

Critical thinking ability is required to solve complex problems which are encountered. To organize thoughts and understanding the underlying requirements and putting it in action helps to resolve issues.

Understanding the business Domain itself is priority as a Business Analyst we need to understand why we do what we do and how can it make a difference to the business we are aligned to . Along with the varied technical skillsets reasoning and solutioning mindset is the key

One thing that I found useful while starting a new job is focusing on communication. In the early days of my new job, I noticed that there was a process in the organization lacking proper documentation, and different stakeholders held fragments of knowledge. Leveraging my communication skills, I reached out to multiple stakeholders, carefully analyzed the process, and presented a comprehensive swim lane diagram. This collaborative effort resulted in not only creating a unified view of the process but also prompted the management to automate the process.

By honing their communication and presentation skills, Business Analysts can build rapport, foster collaboration, influence decisions, and drive successful outcomes for projects and initiatives.

In order to present effectively and aided with good communication skills, mastering the art of storytelling can be incredibly helpful for a business analyst because it allows for the transformation of complex data and insights into compelling narratives that resonate with stakeholders. This helps in capturing attention, fostering understanding, and driving engagement, ultimately leading to better decision-making and successful project outcomes.

In my experience, the most important thing for any new business analyst would be centered around working well with others and then effectively being able to communicate the key findings. Collaboration with other industry experts will offer unique insights while highlighting key themes. From there, major obstacles can be addressed with vetted strategies within real-world scenarios and frameworks. The great ones do not succeed in business or life alone. In fact, they source other top-performers to deliver meaningful impact for the benefit of all.

In my experience, stakeholder management is the most important set of skills you may have in large projects, there are a lot of moving pieces, and something is going to go south for sure. Having great communication skills, empathy and balance to define priorities with your team and your stakeholders will give all the participants the confidence to re engage when things go wrong and the enthusiasm required when things go great!

If I was starting somewhere new and time allowed then I’d spend time with people doing the work. For example in Retail then on the shop floor or if in a Contact Centre then listening in on calls. Ask the people what works well and what doesn’t (long list but that’s OK). This gives you a great baseline knowledge and will help when you need to start considering stakeholders requirements. Keep in touch too - people at ground level are really useful to bounce future ideas off.

As a business analyst, a major portion of your role would involve negotiating with stakeholders as the high priority task for one stakeholder may not be the same for another and we need to be able to make them aware of it. It is necessary to keep the tempers low and clearly communicate when each task will be done. Making a influence/impact matrix can help in managing and classifying stakeholders by putting them into different categories and having ways to manage them like engaging them, keeping them satisfied, simply informing them of the progress or monitoring their levels of interest in the project.

Effective stakeholder management is paramount for a Business Analyst (BA) to succeed in their role. BAs cultivate relationships with stakeholders through open communication, active listening, and empathy to understand their needs, concerns, and objectives. Building trust is crucial, as it fosters collaboration and encourages stakeholders to actively participate in the analysis and decision-making process. BAs employ various techniques such as stakeholder mapping to identify key stakeholders and their influence levels, ensuring that all relevant parties are engaged throughout the project lifecycle. They tailor their communication style and frequency to each stakeholder, ensuring that information is delivered in a timely manner.

Navigating the intricate landscape of stakeholder relationships is a critical skill for Business Analysts. It involves identifying and understanding the needs and expectations of each stakeholder, then balancing them with the project's objectives. Effective negotiation skills are essential in reaching agreements and compromises that respect the interests of all parties involved, thereby facilitating smooth project progression and fostering positive working relationships.

Extra skills that needs to be honed: - Always ask why, as many times to be able to get the real reason for any changes / implementations to be made. Oftentimes, the stakeholders are not clear as to what they need versus to what they want. - Resilience. Be adaptive to what is to be done as you will have to wear many hats at the same time. - Be pragmatic. Not everything needs to be done by the book, as you have to adapt to what works practically.

Organisations goal, expectations and set of technical team to work on same. Follow processes, data and systems to identify inefficiencies / opportunities for optimization.

Two things I would add: 1. Be curious. Ask questions. Do your own research. Google is your friend to get you started. Especially when you are learning a new domain, do not take what is given to you at face value, you need to understand more. 2. Do not be an order taker. In other words, don't just write down what a stakeholder tells you their requirements are, wrap it up in a pretty bow and call it a day. We're "analysts" for a reason. Stakeholders will tell us what they think their requirements are. They tell us their wants. It's our jobs to figure out what they need. This requires analysis, looking at the scenario from different perspectives, and figuring out what the true needs are.

Having sighted all the necessary gears to start with, here are a few cog wheels to enhance the ride: 1. A good understanding of Agile & SAFe. Especially the scrum framework as it is widely used in many industries. 2. Knowing what artifacts are used on a day to basis - BRD, FRD, CRs etc. What do these artifacts speak and are composed of. 3. Knowing how to gather and elicit requirments. This is where your entire domain knowledge comes into play. 4. Wireframing & Test Case preparations are also important and can help you in a long run. 5. Data Modelling, Mapping, Analysis shall be a good add on, but ensure not limiting to excel. Explore visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.

When you’re starting a new role, I think it’s really important to give yourself time to take everything in, get to know people and get to know the role/business. It can be tempting to jump straight in to a project, especially if the project is already in flight, but carving out some time to find your feet will put you in good stead once you do get stuck in. In previous roles, I’ve used this time to have 121s with others on my team and with key stakeholders (to build rapport), as well as do some self learning (e.g. watching e-learnings, playing in system sandboxes etc). Once you are on the ride, it’s difficult to get off again and find this kind of time, so make the most of the first few days or weeks!
