🎓 Peer to Peer Academy: Understanding the Historical Context of Gang Culture and Racialized Violence in Los Angeles Yesterday, Inner City Visions hosted an impactful training session as part of Office of Violence Prevention and CA Community Foundation Peer to Peer Academy, focusing on a critical yet often overlooked topic: Black and Brown relations in schools and communities. This session provided a unique opportunity for violence prevention and community peace workers to delve deep into the historical and current contexts of gang culture and racialized violence in Los Angeles. A heartfelt thank you to all the compañeras who traveled from South Central, Pomona, and other parts to engage in this important conversation. Your presence and perspectives were invaluable. A special shoutout to Alfred, whose years of experience in Florence-Firestone and beyond brought invaluable insight, and to CIW Robert—whose wisdom and maturity, despite his youth, assure us that the future of this work is in great hands. Over the past eight months, I have had the pleasure of working with these two amazing people – Dr. Ashley and Dr. Lipscomb – on the LA County DMH Advancing Racial Equity System Change: Leadership Transformation Training Series, training a couple hundred managers. I have cherished every minute of it. Their genuine approach to improving both individuals’ skills and the systems they work within has been truly inspiring. They keep it real, and their authenticity is much appreciated. Their presenting skills and ability to work well together are admirable. Looking forward to Phases 2 and 3.
