The mission of the Tampa Bay Chapter of (ISC)2 is to expand the knowledge of it’s members, students and professionals in the study of information technology, network security, cryptography, cloud security penetration testing, data privacy, software security, digital forensic, legal issues in computer security, computer hacking, CTF (Capture The Flag) and malware analysis. The chapter also sponsors various training activities throughout the year in various topic such as CISSP, Cloud Security, SSCP, Digital Forensic, Penetration Testing, Software Analysis, Information Technology Security in Healthcare and Social Engineering. The chapter is also the official host of the annual BSides Tampa Information Technology Security Conference. The Tampa Bay chapter of (ISC)2 is a registered 501(c)3 educational non-profit organization. All donations and gifts to Tampa Bay chapter of (ISC)2 are tax deductible under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (sections 170, 2055, 2106, 2522).

Happy Day 6 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month!! Today’s topic is around business continuity/disaster recovery (BCDR). BCDR is a plan that organizations draft, implement, test, and hopefully don’t have to execute around various incidents that can happen to them. These incidents can be related to data reaches or even natural disasters. The idea is to have a resilient plan to restore from the incident so you can get up and running quickly and return to normal operations. This week in Florida we have another test for BCDR plans. On the way is Tropical Storm Milton and is projected to be up to a category 3 hurricane by landfall. I am located where you see the arrow and blue dot. As of this post, not a direct hit but you can see that the line has it going 90 minutes north of us into Sarasota. These storms are never exact so we are hoping for the best. What does a hurricane have to do with #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth?! I live in Florida and we have storms all year long, but this time of the year is #hurricaneseason and damage to your home and business can be a big problem. As we prepare for #HurricaneMilton it is great time to look at business backups and hot/cold sights. If your office is in the same geographical location as your backups or data centers - an event like this can knock you out of business for a long time, if not permanently. This is why you want geographical diverse sites... Keep multiple backups and in very different areas of the country or world! If one area is affected by a disaster you can quickly transition to an unaffected backup or data center! This is called Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery or BC/DR for short. Part of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)s standards in 800-53 CP-6 and is CSF PR.DS-11 tells us to keep things separated so one disaster doesn't bring business to a halt. I hope that all my #Florida people stay safe through the storm, and everyone stays safe while online!
