Ever have an epiphany that your strategy didn't align with your vision? Our radio station just wrestled through this revelation and wanted to share. As a faith based, non-profit, we do fundraising – and because we are a radio ministry, our fundraising is on the air and we invite our listeners to give. For many years, our strategy has been raising money against goals, essentially every 30 minutes. We share a goal, tell people to give NOW to hit our goal, then we ask, plead, beg, cajole the audience for 10-20 minutes until we hit the goal. It sounds a little circus-like, but has generally been effective...in hitting goals. However, it is a big turn-off to those that have already donated or those that don’t want to donate. AND, the focus is on raising money, which is NOT the mission of our organization. When recently confronted with this reality, we were encouraged to focus on our mission – Showing People Who Jesus Really Is, and telling the stories of how we were actively doing that in the lives of our listeners. We have a TON of those stories. Ultimately, people don’t give to a goal, even though we have trained them to, and we had mixed in some missional stories. People, however, do give to a cause and a reason – a “why.” So this week, during our on air fundraiser, we are doubling down on the stories of listeners telling us WHY they love our station, what it does for them and why they give, and we are asking others to join in the mission. The ask has an entirely different feel. More mission driven and not goal driven. Is it as effective? Time will tell. But it is more authentic (one of our core values) and who we want to be, not what we want people to do. Look at your mission and vision. Do your strategies align with them? Do you need to rethink and tweak or overhaul? Love to hear your thoughts. This is a big step of faith for us. But it is an alignment check we needed.
