But it reveals a deeper challenge: Despite decades of scientific consensus on existential risks - from nuclear war to pandemics, climate change and ecosystem collapse - humanity has struggled to create effective global solutions. Now, as we face new challenges from AI, cyber and biotechnology, our capacity for international cooperation may actually be decreasing. Every year that we fail to bridge divides and incentivize cooperation across different systems and societies, we lose precious time. This political fragmentation isn't just threatening our distant future - it's actively making life worse for everyone alive today and guarantees worse outcomes for all future generations. While distinct civilizational approaches and autonomous development paths are natural, the fragmentation of global problem-solving capability endangers our shared future. The stakes are unprecedented: 8 billion lives today and 10 billion in our lifetimes depend on our ability to balance legitimate differences with the absolute necessity of cooperation on planetary-scale challenges.
