Choosing the right CRM depends a bit on the industry you’re in, and a lot on the stage of the company. While Salesforce is extremely robust, it’s often too much: ❌Too much product for what most will need upfront ❌Requires too much administration to reasonably manage inhouse early on ❌Has a TCO that’s too high relative to other options like HubSpot that are readily available, fully scalable, and start cheap or free. While the ramifications of tech stack selection for an individual company might seem small, in a new or emerging category or rapidly expanding niche market, the effects of these decisions can be greatly magnified. Here’s an example of how CRM selection caused an entire sector of healthcare to spend too much on its operating costs for close to 20 years: While helping one of our first clients refine their GTM and tech stack to more effectively sell their health tech solution to mental/behavioral health companies, I was surprised to find so many micro businesses in that space running a full blown Salesforce instance implemented and maintained by a 3rd party IT MSP who charged them thousands of dollars per month to support maybe 5 non-clinical staff members. At first this didn’t make sense to me. Why would so many would pay so much more than they needed to for a CRM designed to deliver so much more than they required? As it turns out, there were several reasons: 1. Starting from the industry’s early days, leadership’s education and training has largely been clinically-oriented and focused. Clinically-oriented leaders who tend to be less techically proficient rely more heavily on word of mouth/referrals as their primary sourcing method for technology, and will trust a big name in lieu of extensive research, evaluation, or 1st hand experience. 2. Those who came from other industries to run MH/BH programs first chose Salesforce as their CRM because it was what they were most familiar with. 3. Staff within MH/BH switch companies more frequently than staff in other sectors of healthcare helping Salesforce’s proliferation of continue unchallenged as the de facto standard CRM in use at hundreds of MH/BH companies for nearly 20 years before any serious challengers even entered this market. While companies like Alleva, Kipu Health, and Sunwave have since introduced industry tailored offerings which combine a CRM with an EHR/EMR, billing software, and a variety of other tools, Salesforce’s early penetration in this niche space forced the hand of these later upstarts into a maintaining a strategy of co-existence and interegration which closed off significant OPEX savings to a vital segment of our healthcare system for years. #crm #opex #behavioralhealth #mentalhealth #techstack #revops

Understanding the most common successful client sales cycle creates proper expectations for RevOps teams and leaders alike. Mapping deal stages to the attainment of key milestones is critical for managers to focus on where reps are struggling to advance opportunities instead of relying on spot checking or cherry picking. Sharing this information with reps is also invaluable as it allows them to attenuate the expectations they have of themselves to a meaningful benchmark based, not on the theoretical, or what may have worked once or just once upon a time, but what is currently working most of the time now. Evaluating a rep’s performance based solely on their volume of activity and results leaves out everything in between that the manager themself is responsible for like identifying who needs training, and what top performers are doing differently that might be transferrable to the rest of the team.
