A heartfelt thank you to author David Jay for joining Executive Director Danielle Oristian York and the 21/64 community at yesterday’s book talk on Relationality. We deeply appreciate your insights into the distinctions between transactional and relational work. Your call to connection, care, and collaborative power has inspired us and motivated us to imagine the possibilities in creating these relational spaces. We are honored to share a special milestone with you—the release of a report marking 20 years of next gen donor engagement through 21/64’s Grand Street program.  The first longitudinal study of its kind, this report provides a comprehensive look at the evolution of next gen donors, first-person quotes and stories from donors, and strategies for engaging this critical group.    The success of Grand Street has given rise to other significant next gen donor programs and initiatives in the sector and helped inspire philanthropic learning journeys across the globe. Through the Grand Street program and next gen work, 21/64 remains committed to empowering next gen donors with the tools and confidence to navigate their philanthropic roles, making a lasting impact in communities with which they’re involved.    Grand Street would not have been possible without the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies whose investment secured many years of Grand Street and other next gen programs run by 21/64. Thanks to the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation, who stepped in to support Grand Street in a significant way after ACBP sunset, and to their next gen family member Joya Sonnenfeldt whose leadership helped make this report possible. Lastly thanks to the fifteen other Grand Street members and their families who contributed to the program to pay it forward for future members to attend, learn and grow.   For questions, please contact Andine Sutarjadi at andine@2164.net

Join 21/64 in Boston, MA on October 22-23, 2024 for a transformative two-day training: Managing Family Dynamics & Talking About Money   Families are complex. As advisors who work within multigenerational family systems, we must deftly navigate these complexities to help family members unite productively in common purpose. In a day and age when productive conversation among individuals with differing viewpoints can be challenging at best (and often fraught with peril), managing family dynamics in such areas as wealth, legacy, philanthropy, and next generation succession, is critical to our shared success.   Our two-day training, Managing Family Dynamics & Talking About Money is designed for 21/64 Certified Advisors who operate within these challenging systems. - On day one we’ll look at the hidden dynamics embedded within family systems, and learn ways to shift these dynamics on behalf of the group. - On day two, we delve into the topic of money, providing easily accessible ways to talk about money with clients, donors, and fund holders. Learn how to support clients who grapple with engaging their children in these conversations. This training will be hosted at the office of Brown Brothers Harriman. Register before seats are filled. You came, we played! We’ve been so inspired by Amanda Weitman using 21/64 tools in her work with the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (https://lnkd.in/e8Sp5v_3) to lead experiences of transformational change.  Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eQgRujSQ “Saturday evening, I was at San Quentin doing a values workshop with a group of men in a program called Awareness in Domestic Abuse. It was a group of 30 men who are participating in this 12-week program… It is so fun to let them know that for the next 2 hours they can drop everything they were thinking about regarding their character defects and focus only on their values which are all good. I cannot express in words the experience of them seeing good in themselves. Then they paired up and shared with each other what values they see in each other. Then we discussed what it was like to identify good in others. So amazing!” Thank you, Amanda, for your work to bring such a positive experience of humanity to your work at Wells Fargo as well as in your volunteer work at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. We are so inspired by you. 21/64’s rolePLAY kit remains on sale through the end of July! https://lnkd.in/enhaNfg6

Clarifying one’s philanthropic goals can be an ongoing exercise, with time, experience, and smart counsel yielding ever finer clarity and specificity. For example, a donor might know they want to support the sciences, but then what? Where does one even begin? How does one navigate intrinsic complexities and find viable grant recipients? Even more, how does one know they’re making a difference?  That’s where Elizabeth Stolow Weiss shines. As Senior Director, Philanthropic Advising at the Science Philanthropy Alliance, Elizabeth understands the ins and outs of giving in this world. Not only does she advise and support philanthropists with the goal of increasing private funding for discovery science, she also understands how to ground this process with an exploration of identity and values. “The 21/64 Approach Training provided me with tools such as Picture Your Legacy and Motivational Values which help me work with individuals on drawing out what they hope to accomplish with their philanthropy. Sometimes the answer isn’t as straight forward as we think and tools like these allow us to have more meaningful conversations to eventually accomplish more impactful goals.” This past April, Elizabeth worked with The Prebys Foundation to launch a $7 million program designed to bring more diverse perspectives into the laboratory and yield ground-breaking medical research. The initiative seeks to address the critical gap in women and underrepresented groups in leading research positions by offering substantial funding to researchers for projects that might otherwise go unsupported. Thank you Elizabeth for sharing about your work with the 21/64 community! Click the attached pdf to read Elizabeth's full spotlight piece.

Unlocking Play this Summer! The work of family decision making can be serious business, yet it doesn’t always have to be. rolePlay is a tool to help you leverage an often overlooked, yet powerful, way to explore your role: play. “Play generates optimism, fosters empathy and promotes a sense of belonging and community.” - Bob Fagan Play is more than just fun and games. Neuroscience has proven that play relaxes our brain and leads to better problem solving. Holding something tangible, something you can touch and move sparks understanding: It can make even the most heady, conceptual ideas more accessible and manageable. We at 21/64 hope you can embrace play this summer, personally and professionally. 21/64’s rolePlay toolkit is on sale through July 31st (30ROLEPLAY2024), join us for the rolePLAY Tool Talk on July 16th!  https://lnkd.in/eKuHRJhr For more on the power of play… The National Institute for Play agrees with Newsweek that play – feeling playful – is seriously important for a healthy life. Each person feels playful in their own unique way. Here’s their July 2023: https://lnkd.in/ecJNdPR7          Dr Stuart Brown on The 7 Properties of Play: https://lnkd.in/eeDShFaA          Taking Charge Interview with Dr Stuart Brown: https://lnkd.in/esK9CheB The Power of Play – a report by NIFP: https://lnkd.in/eV2vaDVG rolePlay was developed by 21/64 and funded in part by The Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation’s initiative on youth philanthropy, Youth Philanthropy Connect. Inspiration and ideas that inform roleplay come from Deborah Sagner, Jan Jaffe, The National Institute of Play, as well as researchers Stuart Brown and Bob Fagan.
