Thrilled to be back for another year of celebrating excellence in Australian science at the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes! I'm continually inspired by the incredible impact our scientists are making. A special shoutout to all the UNSW teams who were nominated—your innovative work and dedication are truly commendable. The night was made even more memorable spent with two incredible female scientists, Professor Melissa Hart and the amazing Jenny Newell, the director of the Climate Solution Centre at Australian Museum, which I had the pleasure to contribute to. A reminder that we have a Postdoctoral position open looking at Weather Resources for energy applications in climate models. The 3 year position is part of the new Centre of Excellence of Weather for the 21st Century and is based out of Monash University in Melbourne. Applications close on Thursday night 5th September Australian Eastern Standard Time.

While the pleasant warmth may appear unexpected, ANU expert in climate extremes, Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, cautioned that a warmer winter is a sign that climate change is approaching an irreversible critical stage: "Because it's exactly what we expect in a world fuelled by climate change. When we have really intense heat waves, regardless of the time of the year, it's concerning," Professor Perkins-Kirkpatrick said. ICEDS Director Mark Howden agrees with this concern, emphasising the underlying cause: "There's a long-term trend towards increased temperatures in Australia, as there is globally. And what we'll see now is just a foretaste of what will come, because we're not reducing our greenhouse gas emissions at the moment." Read more ▶️ https://loom.ly/qQmlZMk

New publication: The forthcoming IPCC Special Report on Cities and Climate Change is a crucial opportunity for the importance and vulnerability of cities to be accurately reflected in global climate science. Writing in PLOS Climate, Dr Negin Nazarian, Professor Melissa Hart and their collaborators have called for the urban climate research community to play a larger role in integrating their physical understanding of urban climate processes in global climate change discussions. This work took place across the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes and the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre, in collaboration with Winston Chow, Gerald Mills, Ariane Middel, Scott Krayenhoff, Dr. Gaby S. Langendijk, Lei Zhao, Benjamin Bechtel and Andrew Pitman, AO, FAA.

Job opportunity: We are recruiting a Research Fellow - Weather Resources in Climate Models, based at Monash University. Working with Ailie Gallant, the successful candidate will investigate aspects of weather resources in climate models with application to the renewable energy sector, including wind, solar radiation and precipitation. You will have a doctoral qualification in Atmospheric Science, or a closely related discipline. You will have demonstrated experience working with climate model output or other large datasets on weather-scale applications. Closes Thursday 5 September.

New opportunities for transdisciplinary PhDs at Monash. Transdisciplinary PhDs on the Communication of Weather and Climate Science at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. We are seeking prospective PhD students to work on transdisciplinary research problems related to the communication of climate change and weather science. The projects will incorporate aspects of climate science and social science and are offered jointly between the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather and the Monash University Climate Change Communications Research Hub. Applicants with strong backgrounds in the physical sciences, environmental science or social sciences, or from a relevant transdisciplinary background, are encouraged to apply. Eligibility requires a minimum of 4-years of study with a degree that includes a research thesis component (Bachelor + Honours, or Bachelor+Masters program). Many congratulations to our Chief Investigator Negin Nazarian of UNSW, who is among the NSW Young Tall Poppy Award winners for 2024. Negin has been recognised for her outstanding research and outreach work in heat mapping and urban climatology. The Tall Poppy Campaign is an initiative of the Australian Institute of Policy and Science.
