Have you ever had a question, or wondered something, and turned to social media for the answer? 🧐 Maybe you're looking for recipe inspo or a cold remedy? Well, according to Brandwatch, you're not alone. "An impressive 76% of consumers use social media to search for or discover new products and brands."
Specifically, we’re seeing that about 50% of millennials have used TikTok as a search engine and 64% of Gen Z has. These numbers are growing rapidly 📈and TikTok is trying to reinforce this behavior.
TikTok is now encouraging users to add a new Search shortcut to their phone home screen so they don't have to open up the TikTok app and navigate to the search page. Making it thaaatttt much faster for people to turn to TikTok for information instead of Google.
Back in 2022, a Google exec acknowledged TikTok’s threat to Google’s core search business, but it looks like now TikTok is going after more than just search. 👀
Discovery is already a big deal on TikTok, with many young users, in particular, now regularly looking for answers in the app but this new shortcut could help create shopping behaviors that could also help TikTok to become more of a shopping destination 🛍, by highlighting relevant product matches in the app. There has been a lot of chatter of the last year of social media becoming more of a shopping destination, and while this might not have made a huge splash yet, this update from TikTok only reinforces this hypothesis.
TikTok is on a mission to extend its value beyond entertainment and embed itself as a more crucial utility for its billion-plus users, and we’re already seeing signs of that…
For example, in China, users can search for local businesses, restaurants, entertainment, etc. via TikTok, and can even order food for delivery directly from the app.
We don’t know when these new features will roll out into the US market but it’s certainly something we will keep an eye on as we know it will change consumer behavior, and therefore eventually should affect your TikTok strategy.
🍿 What do you think? Do you use TikTok for search? Have you bought something from the TikTok shop?
