  • Fibonacci fē-bə-ˈnä-chē (noun) an integer in the infinite sequence of which the first two terms are 1 and 1 and each succeeding term is the sum of the two immediately preceding ( 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, … ) —Websters Dictionary Fibonacci is the nature of life. We start somewhere (birth, love, a new project, a new career) and begin to build our lives or move in new directions. Mistakes are made, lessons are learned, and success is inevitable. Choices become the "preceding integers" that continually add up. Being conscious of the power of this natural progression can be a guide during times transition. Recently, I was in conversation with a close friend about that very thing: transition. What do you do when you feel like you've come to the end of the road? How do you make the next move? Where do you look for the next path? Transition feels funky. I don't like it. It feels way better to move fast and smooth. (It's why I enjoy skiing so much.) Being in the groove is fun and inspiring. Feeling the Flow is uplifting. Transition sucks. So how can we un-suck the stuck? How might we look to the lessons of Fibonacci to guide us? Well, it looks like simple math. 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+2=5, current+past=future. Consider what came before. Examine what activities inspire happiness. Write thoughts in a journal about past and current states. Get in the studio and play around with new materials and add them to old art. Unearth an unfinished project and tinker again. Take a trip to a favorite spot and sit still and wonder. Sit still and wonder. Listen. Look. Think. Feel. Do like Nature does. Nature is not always in motion. Nature is not always in obvious growth. If we take lessons from the center of a tiny flower, we will, most certainly, see a path forward and grow. Current+Past=Future.
