Recently I had the privilege of attending the 2nd annual 5CP & SALA Summit in Chicago. The event was truly inspiring and a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from organizations that share a passion for making a positive impact. 5th Century Partners (5CP) is a private investment firm that shares BMO’s commitment to driving both economic value and social impact by focusing on investing in middle-market companies within the healthcare, consumer, and business services sectors. Equally impressive is the SALA Series, an events and media-driven platform and community that brings together purpose-driven leaders. The Summit provided an opportunity to engage, learn and build new partnerships with fellow investors and business leaders. BMO was once again a proud sponsor, and I had the honor of moderating a panel discussion on “New approaches to conflict resolution, trauma, and gun violence” with Arne Duncan, former U.S. Secretary of Education and Founder and Managing Partner Chicago CRED, Marshall Hatch Jr., Executive Director Maafa Redemption Project, and Curtis Toler, Director of CVI Innovation Chicago CRED. One thing you can say about Arne Duncan is he's not afraid to take on enormous challenges. After serving as CEO of Chicago's Public Schools and then for seven years as Secretary of Education, Arne returned to his native Chicago and created Chicago CRED, a non-profit aimed at reducing gun violence and saving lives in his hometown. With the number of homicides hitting a 25-year high in 2021, CRED takes a holistic approach bringing together proven models—street outreach, life coaching, and counseling, violence prevention, workforce development, advocacy and prevention—to create transformative change in the South and West Side communities of Chicago. It's been said the sign of a good discussion is you don't want it to end -- that certainly was the case with the extraordinary panel discussion Arne helped lead during our 5th Century Partners & SALA Summit last week in Chicago! Often, there is a difference between the #values an organization includes on “the poster” versus what is "put into practice". I had the privilege of seeing 5th Century Partners yet again put its #culture into practice at their offsite in Austin, TX. It takes an aligned set of team members who feel safe and trust one another, and leaders like Marques Torbert, Bruce Hampton and Jessica Patton who wholeheartedly believe in culture as a differentiator and foundational element of their success. I saw all of the above on display by the team at the #offsite, with one example being when I led the team through a #cultureworkshop. The team consistently showed a remarkable degree of openness and engagement throughout, which was rooted in safety, trust, and commitment to each other. The shared values and cohesion were palpable. Some key takeaways include: 1) The importance of values guiding strategic decisions and then being woven into the systems that serve as the scaffolding of an organization (e.g., onboarding, performance reviews, post-mortems). 2) Ensuring continuous improvement of the culture through intentional and constant discussion, codification, and refinement; the culture is a living-breathing thing that gets built over time. 3) Acknowledging that at times there is tension between values, and that’s okay, because what’s important is to learn from it and acknowledge it (this is one point in which orgs begin to show signs of becoming a more sophisticated and mature culture). Credit to the entire team for their engagement and to Marques, Bruce and Jessica for being intentional about putting the culture into practice from day-zero!
