#AlbumOfTheWeek - The Tables Will Turn, by Brandon Sanders . Drummer Brandon Sanders believes everyone should have a grandmother who runs a jazz club, as it was at his grandmother’s venue, the Casablanca in Kansas City, that he first encountered the music of legends like Jimmy Smith and Grant Green. In his sophomore album for Savant, “The Tables Will Turn,” he honors his grandmother, Ernestine Parker, starting with the track “Miss Ernestine.” His understated, whispery touch on the drums revitalizes jazz classics, including Parker’s “Moose the Mooche” and Monk’s “Four in One.” The album also features a pop rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature,” with guest vocalist Christie Dashiell. With contributions from notable musicians, this album marks a significant milestone in Sanders’ musical journey. . Thank you Michael, our music director and host of 88 Jazz Place Mornings and Classics & Grooves, for recommending this album! Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter in order to have access to our #AlbumOfTheWeek. 🔗 Tune into 88.9 FM or stream WDNA.org to listen to new music all week!

Senior Account Executive @ 88.9FM WDNA | Sales, Marketing, Copywriting, & Voiceovers.

In 2015, my world turned upside down. A devastating car accident took a toll on my body, my mind, and the business I had nurtured to $3 million in sales. Forced to step away from my work, I received the news from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs that I was “unemployable.” The next seven years were a journey of resilience and rehabilitation, fighting to regain my place in the workforce and rebuild my life. My options were limited by my medical conditions and the medications I needed. That’s when WDNA 88.9FM came into my life, offering me a chance first as an intern and later as a full-time employee. In my second year, life threw another curveball, and I had to reduce my hours. Yet, I wasn’t alone. WDNA stood by me, with the unwavering support of Maggie Pelleyá (may she rest in peace) and Howard Duperly, who both showed me such empathy and understanding. When we lost Maggie in mid-2023, the whole WDNA family felt the profound sadness of her passing. In 2024, I proudly returned to full-time work, equipped with renewed knowledge and a deepened passion for what I do. Today, I flourish, excited to step into the station every morning, eager for new responsibilities and honored by the trust my colleagues place in me. Just recently, I was entrusted to lead the station while our GM and Assistant GM were away—a testament to the growth I’ve achieved with WDNA’s unwavering support. But our path forward hasn’t been easy. Due to budget cuts to arts and culture organizations in Florida, WDNA experienced a 21% cut in our operating income. This loss doesn’t include the ripple effect from other arts and culture organizations that would underwrite and advertise on WDNA. With my entrepreneurial background, I’ve been bringing fresh, innovative strategies to boost revenues, and I’m now co-leading our station’s journey into the digital era. As we’d say in the Navy, “Standby for heavy rolls, as the ship comes about.” This story is one of resilience, second chances, and the power of community. WDNA has been my lifeline, a place that believes in giving opportunities and lifting people up. And that’s why I’m sharing my journey with you during our Fall Pledge Drive. Supporting WDNA 88.9FM means sustaining a home for arts, culture, and people like me who have found purpose within these walls. Your contribution matters. It allows us to remain the heartbeat of arts and culture in South Florida and beyond. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for standing with us. And thank you, Maggie, Howard, Brandon Buth, and the entire WDNA family, for this gift of a lifetime. Please consider supporting WDNA 88.9FM Serious Jazz Public Radio. Your generosity is the reason we can continue our mission and be a beacon for so many. 🫶 Link: https://lnkd.in/eDv8ZnTS #SupportPublicRadio #SaveArtsAndCulture #JazzCommunity #NonprofitFunding #StandWithWDNA #WithHeart

#AlbumOfTheWeek - Songs My Father Would Dig, by Bob Baldwin . Bob Baldwin’s first straight-ahead jazz project in tribute to his father features Richie Goods on bass, Tony Lewis on drums, and Café da Silva on percussion, honoring the music of jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Baldwin reflects on his influences, noting that his father, a Renaissance Man skilled in photography and music, inspired him by filling their home with the sounds of jazz greats during his childhood. . Thank you Michael, our music director and host of 88 Jazz Place Mornings and Classics & Grooves, for recommending this album!
