October 10 is World Mental Health Awareness day — a day to help ⬆️ awareness of conditions and ⬇️ the stigma for those around us. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. If you or someone you care about is struggling or in crisis, help is available. 📞Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. 📖To learn how to get support for mental health, drug, and alcohol issues, visit FindSupport.gov. 📍To locate treatment facilities or providers, visit FindTreatment.gov or call SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 800-662-HELP (4357). https://lnkd.in/es9Wk84a Remember, kindness is a gift everyone can afford. Thank you to Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, Ph.D for sharing these great resource from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Are locked cabinets necessary? With the advent of technology, AED costs are lower and cellular technology is more accessible (Avive Solutions Inc. LTE connected AEDs for tracking, Richard Lazar’s AED sentinel connected technolgy, LTE cameras). Also, if someone vandalizes an AED, the public outrage in a community would fuel donations with enough to more than replace the unit. Let’s just get more AEDs out there, and let’s make sure they’re in areas where lots of people live/work/play! -Robbie MacCue, MBA, FP-C
Not many get stolen and people get hurt in the panic of unlocking them: see our International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) review on the impact of locked cabinets for AEDs -now out in Resuscitation Plus https://lnkd.in/geEuxVaS

Great insights for any community leaders…
Emergency management has five major phases: prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. As a former emergency manager and a current health and safety professional, I can tell you that resources invested in the first three phases will save lives in the fourth phase and potentially time and money in the fifth. However, a crucial overarching consideration in any phase must be addressed more. It is inclusion. Safety is one of a human's most essential needs, no matter where we are on the spectrum from #psychosocialhazards to natural disasters. Over the past week, communities in the metropolitan Atlanta area have experienced both natural and human-caused disasters. While both are in the response and recovery phases, we should all use this to review our prevention, preparedness, and mitigation plans. Each of these safety-related activities begins with us personally and expands to a point where we will need assistance from others vulnerable to the same hazards. Safety is less effective when done FOR people or TO people. It is most effective when it is done WITH people. Nature will always have something that it can do that is bigger than any of us individually. We'll all have to decide the degree to which we are willing to be at risk by not working together. If you are considering these questions and want help, don't hesitate to contact us at ID2 Solutions. We can help with your plans at both ends of the spectrum. This won't be the last incident. The first three phases of dealing with the next disaster should have already started.

My wife laments that my political career could be stymied by the fact that I don't suffer fools quietly: The more that #MobileMedicine agencies interoperate with the rest of the healthcare system, the more infuriating it is to hear supposed healthcare "experts" forgetting that during a crisis like #HurricaneHelene...WHO DO YOU THINK IS GOING OUT TO THE PATIENTS? 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁🏥 It's not just hurricanes, or tornadoes, or wildfires, or earthquakes. Who went TO the patients during #COVID19? Who goes TO the crash scene? Who goes TO the vehicle that's caught in deep water? Who revives the poor soul who overdosed in the alleyway? SACRED WORK HAPPENS OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL. 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁🏥 We should be grateful for emergency departments, trauma surgeons, and every type of nurse. But it's a face-slap to every #EMT, #Paramedic, #Firefighter, #CriticalCareMedic, #CommunityParamedic, and #TrooperMedics when people discuss "healthcare providers" -- yet forget that patients don't teleport to the hospital. 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁🏥 View photos of this hurricane's aftermath on CNN, in the The New York Times, the The Wall Street Journal, or your favorite channel. You'll see #ambulances, #fire engines, and #police cruisers. These brave souls have families of their own. They feel heat, cold, hope, fear, and pain, too. THEY RISK THEIR OWN LIVES FOR EACH PERSON THAT THEY PULL FROM THE WATER. (They also risk snake bites, gators, mosquitos, and more, just like their patients.) 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁🏥 But if you're viewing this on Linkedin, *they likely make less money than you do.* Responders -- in the field, in comms centers, and in EOCs -- are chronically underappreciated but chronically overtaxed. I'm not a clinician. During moments like this, I wish I were, so I could do more to help them. What I can do -- my superpower -- is to tell their story...that's an imperative we all share. We owe them as much, followed by a beer, and a raise (at last). 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁🏥 ========== (Bell Ambulance, Inc. - thanks for posting this photo, and for your commitment.)
