About us
At some point in our lives, we are all likely to be primary caregivers to a child, spouse, parent or other loved one. And we all deserve the ability to take care of our own health and personal well-being. Yet for too many workers, especially those with the fewest resources, a new baby or a serious illness can spell financial ruin. Gaps in our laws leave too many families struggling. It doesn’t have to be this way. A Better Balance is the leading national nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to work-family justice. We use the power of the law to ensure all workers can care for themselves and their loved ones, without sacrificing their economic security. Through legislative advocacy, direct legal services and strategic litigation, and public education, our expert legal team combats discrimination against pregnant workers and caregivers and advances supportive work-family policies like paid sick time, paid family and medical leave, fair scheduling, and accessible, quality childcare and eldercare. When we value the work of providing care, which has long been marginalized due to sexism and racism, our communities and our nation are healthier and stronger.

Earlier this month, we were thrilled to gather in New York City to celebrate the legacy of our Co-Founders, Dina Bakst and Sherry Leiwant, and to give a warm welcome to our new President, Inimai Chettiar. We were so happy to enjoy food, drinks, and lively remarks from all of our speakers as we celebrated this milestone for our organization alongside our friends and supporters. The future of our movement for work-family justice is bright!

Access to paid sick time varies widely by state. As we told Bloomberg Law, ballot measures in Alaska, Nebraska, and Missouri will allow workers to make their voices heard directly and vote on this fundamental right.

New York City and State have been national leaders when it comes to paid sick time. As we told the New York Times, New Yorkers also need a stronger temporary disability insurance program, so they can take paid leave for longer term medical needs.

"I was placed on involuntary, unpaid leave, with four months to go before my due date. It’s sad and degrading to be told you aren’t allowed to work or provide for your growing family when you know you can and have been cleared to work by doctors." What happened to our client Arya when she was working as a cashier for Speedway was illegal. Hear from Arya about why she filed a charge with the EEOC to defend her rights under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act:
