  • Here’s the answer to our Friday Quiz: B- Attics and C- Crawlspaces. Protect Your Home and Health with Proper Dryer Venting According to International Residential Code Standards, dryer vents should never terminate into enclosed spaces, as this can cause water damage and mold growth that compromise your home’s structure and your family’s health. Additionally, lint is highly flammable and, without an outlet, will continue to accumulate. This buildup can lead to poor indoor air quality, dryer overheating, and an increased risk of fire. For fire safety, vented dryers must exhaust lint and water vapor through sidewalls or roofs, with the shortest and most direct route possible for optimal airflow. Check for signs of vent obstruction: -Lint buildup on the vent cover louvers or hood flap. -Louvers or flap not staying open when the dryer is on. -Hot dryer, laundry room, or extremely hot laundry. -Lint buildup in the laundry room or dryer. -Condensation along the ductwork. -Dryer shutting off mid-cycle or laundry not drying after 45 minutes. When was the last time you cleaned your dryer vent? If it’s been more than a year, contact AALPS Dryer Vent Cleaning by text or phone. We have over 37 years of experience protecting homes and property in the Greater San Antonio area and surrounding towns in central Texas. Don’t wait—dryer fires are preventable. • Where Are Dryer Vents Located? Most people don't give much thought to dryer vents until they buy their first dryer. A dryer vent is the ductwork that connects the exhaust from the back of a dryer to the outside to expel water vapor, dust, and lint. According to International Building Code Standards, clothes dryers should be vented in the shortest, most direct path possible. Whether they exit through the roof or a sidewall depends on the laundry room's location. Sidewall exits are preferred as they are easier to access and inspect for obstructions. Good airflow is indicated by open louvers or a flap on the dryer vent cover when the dryer is running. Roof exhaust terminations are less desired because airflow works against gravity, causing lint to backflow and build up more easily. Plus, dryer vents which exit through the roof can be out of sight so you can't see lint collecting there. Any obstruction in the ductwork can overheat your dryer causing lint microfibers to ignite, leading to fires in the laundry room, the dryer itself, or the vent. Dryer vents should be cleaned annually to ensure maximum airflow. Homes with furry pets or large families may need cleaning every six months, especially if clothes remain damp after 45 minutes or the dryer shuts down mid-cycle. Do you know where your dryer vent exits your home? When was the last time you cleaned it? Answering these questions is crucial to safeguard your home and family from the risk of a fire. • Are Dryer Vents Supposed to Get Hot? While retrieving a wayward sock from behind your dryer you notice that the dryer vent is very hot. Is that normal? Dryer vents are designed to channel water vapor and lint from the dryer to the outside of your house, with temperatures typically ranging between 120 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit so, they will get hot enough to cause burns with prolonged skin contact. To prevent dryer fires, dryers have thermostats that shut off the heat when internal temperatures reach 185°F. However, a faulty heating element or persistent overheating can damage these safety mechanisms, increasing temperatures to the point where lint or fabric might ignite. Signs of an impending dryer fire: 1- A burning smell from the dryer or laundry room. 2- A very hot dryer surface, hot textiles, or a hot and humid laundry room. 3- Damp laundry despite 45 minutes in the dryer, or the dryer shutting off mid-cycle. 4- Condensation along the dryer ductwork. 5- Increased lint buildup in the dryer, laundry room, or vent cover. 6- Vent cover flap or louvers not staying open while the dryer is on. 7- A musty smell in the dryer or laundry room. If the dryer vent feels excessively hot, or if you notice any of the above warning signs it’s crucial to get it checked. Safety standards include annual inspection and cleaning to prevent dryer fires, so if you can’t recall the last time that you cleaned your dryer vent contact a trusted expert—AALPS Dryer Vent Cleaning. We have over 37 years' experience protecting people from dryer fires in the Greater San Antonio Area and smaller towns in Central Texas. #dryers #dryervent #dryerventcleaning #sanantoniotx #sanantoniotexas

  • Happy Monday Everyone! The answer to our Friday Quiz is B and C. To reduce your risk of a dryer fire, always clean the lint screen before each load to maintain good airflow. Additionally, cleaning the dryer’s lint housing (where you insert the lint screen) with a dryer vent cleaning brush, followed by a long vacuum attachment every 4 to 6 months, will help maintain good airflow, improve dryer efficiency and reduce lint buildup in the ductwork. Why is lint so flammable? Lint particles consist of ultradry microfibers that can easily ignite if your dryer overheats. Therefore, it’s crucial to vacuum your laundry room weekly and clean your dryer vent every 12 months, or sooner if drying times increase. A blocked dryer vent can cause your dryer to overheat, leading to a potential fire. While options A and D don’t directly reduce the risk of a fire, they do increase your chances of survival if a fire starts in the laundry room. Interconnected smoke alarms are ideal because if a fire starts in another part of the house, the alarm in your bedroom will also go off. A carbon monoxide alarm is necessary if you own a gas dryer to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from a gas leak. Don’t wait…dryer fires are preventable. Call AALPS Dryer Vent if you haven’t cleaned your dryer vent in the past year. Take action now to keep your dryer and dryer vent lint free and ensure your smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarms are in working order to protect your home and loved ones from a fire. #dryers #dryervent #dryerventcleaning #sanantoniotx #sanantoniotexas
