We commend our member institutions for their dedication to advancing diabetes research, care, and prevention. Thank you for your impactful work in improving the lives of those living with diabetes.
November is American Diabetes Month. It's essential we all learn more about #diabetes, understand the warning signs, know how to support loved ones with diabetes, and most importantly, work towards new treatments and cures. Since the discovery of insulin in 1922, no drug has been able to alter the course of Type 1 diabetes - until recently. Check out this AAMCNews article about a new medication capable of delaying the onset of the condition by an average of two years, and sometimes more than a decade. Really interesting (and exciting) read: https://lnkd.in/ebUxmp-M. Why are older adults especially vulnerable to severe weather events that are linked to climate change — hurricanes, heat waves, floods, and wildfires? For example: When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, people ages 60 and older accounted for 75% of the deaths. During the Pacific Northwest heat wave of 2021, most of the nearly one thousand who died were older adults. In the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century — at Lahaina, Hawaii, in 2023 — more than two-thirds of the approximately 100 fatality victims were 60 and older. A new article from the AAMC explains how biological conditions (like decreased immunity and less ability to regulate body temperature) and life circumstances (like economic insecurity and dependence on others to get around) put many older people at the greatest risk of all from severe weather. https://ow.ly/2OE150TXBqM

Doctors are trained to respond to tragedies. But no doctor is trained to see grade schoolers lose their lives in a mass shooting. How do you respond in the moment, confront the emotional aftermath, and recover stronger? Richard Kamin, MD, of UConn Health can tell you. He walked through the Sandy Hook school in the aftermath of the shooting there: “I started having intrusive thoughts. I would see my child’s faces on some of the bodies. I was afraid I might be broken.” AAMCNews talked to six extraordinary doctors about how those experiences affected them — in the moment of crisis, in the aftermath, and for the rest of their lives. Read and watch their powerful stories of struggle and strength in this multimedia project. https://ow.ly/ynrF50TVzPo
