Today the nurse anesthesia resident on the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA)’s DEI Committee anesthesia resident Megan Harris and her doctoral project partner Vence Malicdem reminded me of one of my “WHYs.” They simultaneously hosted an in-person and online career day titled, More Is Better: Implementation of a Career Day to Diversify the Field of Nurse Anesthesia. A room of diverse nurses were educated and inspired to pursue a career in nurse anesthesia at DePaul University. 🚀 Exciting Milestone Alert! 🚀 This past Tuesday, we held our first meeting to establish an association dedicated to Latine Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). After months of dedicated planning and collaboration with remarkable individuals Carolina Meza Saenz, Katherine Faltot and Carlota Izaguirre, we are thrilled to take this important step forward. The need for more Latine CRNAs in our profession is critical. Latine communities are often underrepresented in healthcare, leading to disparities in the quality of care provided. By fostering a diverse workforce, we can enhance cultural competence in patient care and address these crucial health disparities. Our association aims to create a supportive network for Latine CRNAs, focusing on mentorship, professional development, and advocacy. We are committed to ensuring that more Latine individuals have access to the resources and opportunities necessary to thrive in this vital field.
