As our membership year kicks off and the 2024-25 AAPL Executive Committee gets settled in, we wanted to look back and give major kudos to the 2023-24 AAPL Executive Committee for the amazing leadership, time, skills and wisdom they provided to AAPL and the land profession this past year. We especially want to spotlight the officers who are rotating off ExCom, including Carl D. Campbell, CPL, Rodney Black, CPL, R. Dirk Vander Ploeg II, CPL, Jerris Johnson, CPL, and Brian K. Tolson, CPL. This flagship year was packed with major advocacy wins, exciting new offerings, professional development advancements, numerous sellout events and so much more. AAPL could not have accomplished these feats without the guidance our officers delivered. Special thanks to Carl D. Campbell for the incredible three years he served as first vice president, president and immediate past president. The vast amount of sacrifices an AAPL president makes to their business, family and hobbies over three years are astonishing and greatly appreciated by all members. ConGRADulations to the AAPL Student Member graduating class of 2024! New this year — and in an effort to help elevate the land profession — the Landman Scholarship Trust distributed tasseled cords for graduating students from AAPL’s accredited programs who successfully passed the Registered Landman exam. Tasseled cords date back to the 14th century as status symbols. Today, these graduating cords offer a way for students to display their achievements or honors within particular associations, degrees or clubs. The LST designed the tasseled cords based on AAPL’s distinctive brand colors and hopes to bring visual awareness to AAPL, the land profession and industry across all the accredited campuses. A total of 49 student members took advantage of the certification fast track offered to energy management degreed students from AAPL’s accredited programs. These students now have an opportunity to upgrade their AAPL memberships from Student to Active and they will be officially designated as Registered Landmen. Congratulations, graduates! One of the more unique educational offerings at our 70th Annual Meeting was a demonstration from Boston Dynamics that also included an overview of robotic applications in the energy industry and public safety environments. Phones were out in droves when AAPL President Brooks Yates, CPL, took Boston’s Dynamics’ iconic robot dog Spot for a walk! AAPL would like to thank Matthew Knights and Boston Dynamics for sharing about their advanced mobile manipulation robots as well as all the fascinating work they’ve done in the energy sector. Congratulations to Austin Frye, CPL, for being honored as a 2023-24 Presidential Award for Meritorious Service winner at our 70th Annual Meeting. Outgoing AAPL President Brooks Yates, CPL, recognized Austin for the determination and skills he provided on AAPL’s finances throughout the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Austin has been an incredible asset to the association since joining in 2008, having served on several committees and task forces. The inaugural AAPL Celebrates event was another unique highlight of our 70th Annual Meeting. After a fun cocktail reception (https://bit.ly/4eVwW7x), hundreds of landmen were treated to a night of dinner, drinks, honors, entertainment and stunning views of Boston from 33 stories high. Three award-winning songwriters from The Bluebird Cafe, Kelly Archer, Adam Hambrick and Jenn Schott, performed and shared the stories behind some of the chart-topping songs they’ve written for legendary artists. Unexpected and cinematic rainfall accompanied the up-close-and-personal experience that capped off an unforgettable day of professional development, networking and AAPL traditions.
