Promoting justice, economic opportunity, and human dignity through the rule of law
About us
For over 30 years, and through our work in more than 100 countries, the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) and our partners have sought to strengthen legal institutions, support legal professionals, foster respect for human rights, and advance public understanding of the law and citizen rights. In collaboration with government agencies, the judiciary, lawyers, bar associations, parliaments, and civil society, we design programs that are responsive to local needs and that prioritize sustainable solutions to pressing rule of law challenges. The ABA established ROLI in 2007 to consolidate its five overseas rule of law programs, including the Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI), which it created in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, ABA ROLI implements legal reform programs in more than 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa. ABA ROLI has more than 400 professional staff working in the United States and abroad, including a cadre of short- and long-term expatriate volunteers who, since the program’s inception, have contributed more than $200 million in pro bono technical legal assistance. Awareness is a powerful tool for change in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the public knows very little about the various forms of #humantrafficking, and in many situations considers it normal or commonplace for someone to experience sexual exploitation, forced marriage, forced begging, forced enrollment in armed groups, forced labor, or child trafficking. Fortunately, progress has been made in the past five years by the Congolese authorities with the creation of the Agency for the Fight against Human Trafficking in 2019 and the criminalization of human trafficking in 2022. On July 30, ABA ROLI and the Coordination for Youth and the Fight Against Sexual Violence and Trafficking in Persons recognized World Day Against Trafficking in Persons by holding an event in Kinshasa to raise awareness and discuss prevention; convening the front-line actors working to combat human trafficking in the DRC. The event was organized ahead of the launch of ABA ROLI’s five-year Action to Reduce and Respond to Exploitation and Trafficking (ARRETE) program in the DRC. ABA ROLI seeks to find success in ARRETE’s goals to augment the state’s ability to identify and prosecute traffickers and build up anti-trafficking support networks tailored to the unique needs of their communities. "Imagine a lush landscape in the Amazon rainforest, bursting with life and biodiversity, now transformed into a desolate wasteland by the relentless pursuit of gold. The haunting echoes of chainsaws and the acrid smell of mercury taint the air as illegal miners carve deep scars into the heart of Latin America's most precious ecosystems. This scenario is not a dystopian future but the stark reality faced by countries like Brazil, Peru, and Colombia, where illegal mining has unleashed a torrent of environmental devastation, human rights abuses, and rampant crime.” Check out our latest intern op-ed by Nicolas McMillen, “Gold and Shadows: The Illicit Plunder of Latin America’s Resources". 🌎 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eaEb8UBV
