🌟 An Inspiring Journey of Hope and Togetherness🌟 This past Saturday, I had the incredible honor of participating in the inaugural #MoreThanPinkWalk for Susan G. Komen in Tampa Bay. It was a day filled with inspiration as family, friends, supporters, #survivors, and #thrivers came together, united by a shared experience and a common fight against #breastcancer. As I stood to deliver my survivor speech, I was utterly moved by the warmth of the cheers that erupted when I introduced myself as a survivor. The love and #support pouring from the crowd took my breath away, reminding me of the strength we gain through community. In that moment, I felt the unmistakable bond that connects us all. In a humorous twist, my note card unexpectedly blew away while I was speaking. Instead of feeling flustered, I found myself laughing at the moment, and I was so grateful to have my daughter by my side. She quickly retrieved my card, allowing me to continue sharing my journey. It reminded me how important it is to have our loved ones support us along the way. Throughout the event, there were moments of tears and moments of laughter, but above all, there was an overwhelming sense of love that was simply unmatched. Thank you to everyone who came together to support us all; your presence made a difference in our fight. As we enter Cancer Awareness Month, I want to share that a portion of my book sales in September and October will be donated to Susan G. Komen, dedicated to supporting breast cancer patients. What sticks with them is how you touched their hearts. My veteran father has been in and out of the hospital for 3 months. Yesterday, something special happened - I felt true #empathy. A nurse practitioner called to discuss my dad's care and reassure me: "When you're not here, I've got him." For the first time, I truly trusted and had faith in the healthcare system that always left me uncertain about his well-being. Remember, words are powerful. Even unintentionally, patients and families hold onto every word you say. So, choose your words with care. An inspiring but frustrating book Buried or Planted to read by Stephanie S. Abbott, MBA, CLSSBB, FACHE that captures her cancer survival journey with a great deal of POOR experiences in care, treatments, communication and compassion. Our healthcare CAN BE better than this and MUST BE. I challenge our various Boards of Medicine, Nursing, and essentially all colleges and certifying bodies relevant to healthcare to consider this book as part of their required reading. Stephanie’s experience and her life deserves improvement in our medical and compassionate treatment of each other. Do One Thing to make it better. Stephanie makes it easy for you at the end of each chapter. Years ago, when I was just starting my career, I had the incredible fortune of discovering "The Florence Prescription" by Joe Tye. Inspired by its teachings, I initiated "the pickle pledge" with my teams, and it truly transformed our dynamics. When I first considered writing my own book, I reached out to Joe for guidance. As I pressed send on the email, I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought—it felt like such a long shot that he would actually reply. But to my delight, he did. I'm incredibly grateful for this review! The reader deeply connected with my story, recalling their own experiences and emotions. When Stephanie S. Abbott, MBA, CLSSBB, FACHE found out she had breast cancer at age 37 and as a young mom of two, she felt alone, lost, and scared. Through all the emotions, her healthcare experience did not give her as much comfort as she would have liked.   I met Stephanie 10 years ago, when she began working for Intermountain Health in our patient experience department. After she left Intermountain, we kept in touch, talking on a regular basis. I was moved by her recently released book, Buried or Planted, as Stephanie shares her personal healthcare experience through her breast cancer journey. The transparency she brings to the patient-experience was eye-opening. And the learnings she writes for healthcare leaders from her perspective as a former chief experience officer are straightforward and valuable.   Stephanie outlines the inefficiencies she had to deal with at one California hospital system and the lack of empathy and compassion she received from many healthcare providers there. She also praises physicians and caregivers who took the time, compassion, and care that made her feel like their most important patient. “The patient’s experience is more encompassing than the diagnosis they receive. It’s holistic care that goes beyond physical. It’s also mental and emotional” (pg. 155), Stephanie wrote.   In her book, Stephanie urges healthcare leaders to invest their organization’s culture, to hire good people, and to focus on the holistic care of individual patients with individual needs. “Achieving the highest scores in patient experience isn’t won because of one interaction or one caregiver. It is won by multiple micro-experiences strung together where the patient meets care with limited friction. Friction means patient frustration” (pg. 193) she wrote.   If you are a healthcare executive, or in a leadership role in any organization, I encourage you to read Buried or Planted. Learn from Stephanie’s experience and how you can improve your consumers’ experience. Think about your culture and your processes. Put yourself in your consumers’ shoes and ask how you would want to be treated.   Stephanie, you survived. You are thriving. And you are making a difference.
