#AntiFraudNews The University of Portsmouth’s recent study finds that 40% of elderly adults in the UK face phone-based fraud attempts daily, weekly, or monthly. 80% of the nearly 2000 participants involved in the study were over the age of 75. Key Findings: 📞 Three-quarters (75%) of fraud attempts occur via telephone. 📞 60% of phone fraud was through voice calls and 11% via text messages. 📞 Two-thirds experienced at least one fraud attempt in the past six months. 📞 A fifth (20%) reported being harassed weekly. The US FTC data shows a shift in scam tactics: phone-based fraud dropped from 67% to 32% between 2020-2023, while email and text-based scams increased sharply. Despite this trend, the situation for elderly victims remains alarming. Unfortunately, social campaigns and warnings alone are not enough to combat this issue effectively.
