No, dementia is not an inevitable outcome for those who are old and those "who are going to get it". Lancet's standing commission on dementia has provided a comprehensive report on dementia prevention. The report emphasizes that nearly half of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing these risk factors, offering hope through individual and policy-level interventions, particularly in low-income and marginalized communities. Here are a key takeaways: 1. Despite decreased age-specific dementia incidence in high-income countries, the overall number of people with dementia is increasing due to longer life spans, highlighting the need for effective prevention strategies. 2. The report reaffirms that addressing factors such as low education, hearing loss, hypertension, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, TBI, air pollution, and social isolation reduces dementia risk. 3. Untreated vision loss and high LDL cholesterol are newly identified as significant risk factors for dementia. 4. Early intervention and maintaining low levels of risk factors throughout life are crucial, but there is also evidence that it's never too late to reduce dementia risk. 5. Longer education and cognitive activity, even in midlife, have a positive impact on reducing dementia risk, especially for those with lower educational backgrounds. 6. New meta-analyses strengthen the evidence that treating hearing loss and depression can significantly reduce dementia risk, with hearing aids being particularly effective. 7. Reducing air pollution and smoking cessation have been linked to lower dementia risk, emphasizing the need for public health policies targeting these areas. 8. TBI remains a risk factor for dementia, with new evidence suggesting that contact sports pose a significant risk, necessitating protective measures in sports and after injuries.
