I had the pleasure of coming across this absolute marvel of engineering during a recent trip to Scotland. We have the honor of handing some pretty unique claims around the globe, and some of them have been quite fascinating from a design and engineering perspective, but never one of these (I don’t think there’s more than one). God forbid a claim happen with this one, but if it does, I hope we’re the adjusters on it. The Falkirk Wheel was built during the cleanup of a former open fire clay mine, coal mine and tar works, opening in 2003. It replaced a system of 44 locks that took a barge from an upper canal around 115’ down to a main canal. This originally took dozens of men a full day to get one barge up or down the lock system. Now it takes 5 minutes. I took a time lapse of the wheel lifting one passenger filled vessel to the top and lowering two vessels to the bottom. I’ll post a photo from above in the comments.
