About us

Established in 2018, Accent Dance NYC is a movement-based educational and professional performance initiative rooted in the spirit of collaboration and cultural convergence. The Accent Dance NYC repertory includes work by established artists such as Pedro Ruiz and David Fernandez, as well as emerging artists whose works are commissioned through our new professional development program. Through this program, we commission a new work by a professional, early career choreographer and cover all creative expenses, including choreographer and dancer pay, rehearsal space, and the work’s premiere. The commissioned choreographer also receives professional mentorship and audience feedback during open rehearsals and in-process showings. Following the premiere, the work becomes part of Accent Dance’s repertory, where it is shared with a wide variety of audiences in educational, community, and concert settings. This program had a successful pilot year in 2023-2024, during which we commissioned Will A. Ervin Jr. to create Narcissus, a multidisciplinary work of modern, contemporary, and street dance styles exploring themes of identity, self love, and acceptance. The process also resulted in an original dance film by renowned photographer Mark Mann. Given the program’s positive reception, we look forward to continuing the program and making it a part of our annual offerings.

Last Saturday, November 4th, we had a beautiful time at Accent Dance’s 5th anniversary gala, I AM WE ARE. The energy in the room was incredible, and it was a great opportunity to meet our supporters face-to-face and recommit to our mission with performances, guest speakers, dinner, dancing, and connecting to our community! Thanks to this year’s unprecedented level of participation and passion, we exceeded our fundraising goal! Funds raised will support our multicultural dance education programming for our partner schools as well as bring our newly commissioned dance works to the professional stage. Luis Torres, principal of PS 55 in The Bronx, spoke of arts education in his community as literally “saving lives”. We know every contribution, regardless of size, furthers our mission. We’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and every one of you for your continued support of this important work! Weren’t able to attend or donate yet this year? No problem. If you would like to be part of our mission to help us reach more students and communities, please consider a tax deductible donation and the possibility of matching your grant through your employer. We depend on people like you to support our work and mission. https://lnkd.in/euDk_FTv
