I've been reluctant to do Acquired video episodes, but this one absolutely deserved the full video treatment. It was a fun challenge to try and create a show that was both live *and* a visual spectacle for video... which is out of our typical wheelhouse! Learnings: 1/ Open with a bang. Having Mike Taylor sing "Who Got the Truth?" live added so much energy to the show. 2/ You have to be in the mode of "we are performing and this is a show." It's a totally different skillset than recording audio in our home studios. It's not about re-recording for the 3rd time to make sure I got my wording just right. It's about bringing the fun. 3/ Surprises are free energy to add to the event inertia. If you don't need to announce something... don't! Jamie, Emily, Daniel, Jensen... all surprises. Plus being dressed by Hermès :) As Munger puts it, "the first rule to a happy life is low expectations." 4/ Attention spans are totally different. There is no opportunity to do a 4+ hour podcast live. We've tried this in the past. People just get antsy in their seats, no matter what the content is. Three segments of 20-75 minutes (and an intermission) worked WAY better. 5/ Charts! When Daniel Ek brought Spotify data to share on Acquired's past 12 months, the visuals told the story better than any verbal description ever could. Something for us to ponder on as a podcast that often tries to "describe" financial statements... 6/ Partnership. David and I have no idea how to design a stage, build it, manage the schedule before an event, etc. The J.P. Morgan Payments team, Spiro, and the hundreds of people on the ground were essential. If something's not in your wheelhouse, find a great partner. 7/ Design. 99% of Acquired's design work over the years has been done by me in Photoshop. That wasn't going to cut it this time. Everything about this event was "elevated" from the normal Acquired experience. With live + video, great visuals was essential. INVISIBLE CREATURE, INC knocked it out of the park. The poster, the stage background/lighting, even Zuck's shirt... all of it took the show to another level. 8/ Practice. Normally, we don't tell each other what we're going to say before recording. This was the exact opposite. David and I had a shared 20-page Google Doc. We ran through the show several times. We showed up 6 hours early to rehearse it on stage. 9/ It just takes a ton of time. - Video takes longer to produce (tougher to edit, bigger files) - Live / IRL compounds that since everything must be prepared *before* recording, and there's less chance to fix on-the-fly But it can be totally worth it! Ultimately, both live + video are different mediums. Each medium has different strengths and weaknesses. It was very fun trying to tune Acquired to these particular mediums, at least for one night :)

Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal are the storytellers behind the extraordinary Acquired podcast. They spend hundreds of hours researching before they publish a single episode (my personal favorite: Nintendo). That investment of time is paying off: Spotify users have listened to more than 5.2 million hours of Acquired since 2019. Today, more than 150 million (!) people listen to podcasts on Spotify. And thousands were in the audience this last night as Ben and David hosted a live event at San Francisco’s Chase Center. I decided to stop by and check it out myself….. can confirm that the podcast is just as good live as it is recorded 👍 video should be uploaded to Spotify soon.
