Today is #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay. We often talk about limited accessibility to New York Harbor across our city; imagine the added challenge of accessing our greatest natural resource with a disability. In an effort to make Billion Oyster Project’s field stations and exhibit spaces ADA compliant, we're focused on rolling out language and mobility assistance at our events, including hiring sign language interpreters at community gatherings. We also partner with organizations like ADAPT Community Network - the leading human service not-for-profit and a pioneer in providing cutting edge programs and services for people with disabilities. Every day, they build a more inclusive world for thousands of New Yorkers through education, technology, health, residential and recreational programs in all five boroughs. Happy National Disability Independence Day! This day commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, 1990. The ADA passed into law many monumental changes in the United States, including making discrimination against people with disabilities (PWD) illegal. In addition to this change, the ADA also brought material changes into the lives of PWD, requiring employers to give reasonable accommodations to disabled job-seekers and requiring businesses to make their property accessible to PWD. Though the ADA vastly improved daily life for Americans with disabilities, they still face difficulties and ignorance on public transportation, in the doctor’s office, and financially. ADAPT works to spread awareness and understanding of PWD every day through our HealthLink program, community outreach, self-advocacy groups, and more. If you are interested in helping ADAPT achieve our goals this Disability Pride Month, contact Mark Heffner at mheffner@adaptcommunitynetwork.org or 212-683-6700 x1945 and ask about volunteer and internship opportunities. #ADA #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #Disability

Last week, Brooklyn IRA residents attended the Disability Unite Festival in Central Park. This festival, which is in its 5th year, features musical performances and discussion panels both in the Central Park Naumburg Bandshell and online. The festival describes itself as “celebrating community, and commemorating the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).” The individuals who attended had a wonderful time listening to the live music, meeting new and old friends, and exploring the booths, activities, and art installations. Check out the photos here!
