Beyond COVID: Tomatoes Face Their Own RNA Pandemic 🍅 Tomatoes and peppers, staple crops in many regions, are now grappling with their own RNA-based enemy: Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). Initially detected in Israel back in 2014, ToBRFV has relentlessly charted its course across continents from North America to Asia, leaving a wake of deformed leaves, mottled fruits, and browned crops. Just as with humans, the threat of contagion is palpable, with the virus deploying tools of our own making against us, transmitting itself through handling and even our cultivation tools. 🛠 😷 Do you all remember the restrictions we had to endure during the height of COVID? Well the tomato industry is now challenged with ToBRFV restrictions. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, in recognizing the severity of this menace, laid down restrictions in 2019 on tomato and pepper seed lot imports. A noteworthy challenge with ToBRFV lies in its resilience; it thrives even in watery realms, making its containment and management even more difficult. At Adaviv, we understand that knowledge is power. As of now, no tomato or pepper variety is completely invulnerable to ToBRFV. What growers can do is leverage real-time intelligence and enhanced visibility over these issues, empowering them to stay one step ahead. Hey all, just wanted to send a big thank you to all who joined our panel discussion at Cultivate 2024 on "Using Smart Technology & Artificial Intelligence in Your Operation." It was awesome to moderate such a dynamic discussion about AI in our industry. Here are the key points I took away from the panel: Industry Awareness: AI buzz is everywhere, but its use varies wildly—from drafting emails to monitoring plant health with drones and adaptive climate controls. Yet, AI remains a bit of an enigma for many greenhouse and nursery operators. Early Stages: We’re just scratching the surface of AI's potential. There’s a thirst for concrete use cases and tangible outcomes. Many growers still wrestle with centralizing their data—from plants to inputs to labor—often stuck in manual processes. We need to streamline data collection and organization to integrate AI meaningfully. Collaboration is Key: Big players must lead, partnering with startups to democratize AI for smaller growers. Near-term value to capture: *Crop Health Monitoring: Scaling AI to monitor crop health. *Resource Management: Using AI to understand true costs in a dynamic biological environment and optimizing their allocation/use; light, water, or labor. *Task Automation: Freeing up labor for strategic decisions by automating tedious tasks. Integration: The next big leap is integrating siloed data across plant and production cycles. Centralizing this with AI can minimize waste and capture efficiencies, which is crucial given rising input costs and dropping retail prices. Future Outlook: It’s early days, but the message is clear: adopt AI or get left behind. Growers need to leverage this technology or lose out to those who do. Tech companies must deliver tangible, quick ROI and focus on real value, not just the magic of AI.
