Behind the Gage: Gary Eaton - Mechanical Engineering Supervisor "I started at Adcole 33 years ago as a machine tool design engineer and introduced CAD to the company. Today, I supervise our mechanical engineering group, where I get to work on engineering challenges alongside so many smart and talented people. It is rewarding to play a small role in carrying on Addison Cole’s legacy by continuing to design and build gages that set the standard for CCMM. Our diverse gage model lineup is quite interesting, ranging from a horizontal gage that measures surface finish to a high-capacity vertical gage capable of measuring a crankshaft up to 180” long with radial accuracy down to ±0.5 µm. I was born and raised in Worcester, and I still live there today, where you might find me attending one of my grandkids' ball games, working on a project in my shop, or casting a fishing line."

Metrology Fact: The first known standard unit of measure was the cubit about 4925 years ago with a recorded length as that of the ruling Pharaoh's forearm and hand. The cubit has long since been replaced by worldwide adopted standards, but the Egyptians were able to construct a pyramid with no side of the square base deviating from the average side length of 9000 inches by more than 1/20 of 1 percent. That is incredibly accurate!

The number of EV and hybrid options continues to increase even with the slower rate of growth on full EV vehicles in 2024. According to Cox Automotive's Outlook for 2025, 1 in 4 vehicles sold will be electric or hybrid with the potential for 15 new models to enter the market. OEMs continue aligning with consumer sentiment for greener and more efficient alternatives while maintaining a larger portion of their fleet as internal combustion engines (ICE). No matter the type, Adcole is ready to partner with shaft manufacturers of both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles to provide the best measurement and data necessary for the highest quality and function.
Each year, our Cox Automotive Industry Insights team offers their expectations for dealers, consumers, OEMs, and the U.S. automotive market for the year ahead. Learn more about the five themes our team identified for 2025. https://bit.ly/40p29Lf Jonathan Smoke #coxautomotive
