Every year on the 3rd Thursday of October, Conflict Resolution Day is celebrated across the US. The goal of Conflict Resolution Day includes promoting peaceful conflict resolution, fostering understanding, encouraging collaboration, highlighting the importance of resolving conflicts without violence, and emphasizing the positive impact of dialogue and cooperation. Among our favorite ways to celebrate the day is the Annual Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest sponsored by the Maryland Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO). Every year MACRO hosts a bookmark design contest for Maryland students in grades K-8. The contest provides teachers, parents, and students the opportunity to learn about and share important conflict resolution skills, such as listening; working together to solve problems; talking to each other instead of fighting or bullying; being inclusive; and appreciating and respecting differences. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to use their artistic skills to illustrate their own creative ideas. Kudos to Maryland and to the student artists who bring their talent and creativity forward by participating in this contest! Today marks Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday that honors Indigenous American peoples and celebrates their cultures and contributions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders account for approximately 1.5% of the United States workforce. Still, Indigenous people are often underrepresented in many workplaces and underserved in DEIA initiatives. It's time to reconsider how your workplace supports Indigenous employees, customers, and partners. Ensure your DEIA programming includes content on inclusive language that calls out harmful commonplace appropriation, like “spirit animal,” “totem pole,” or “powwow.” Organizations with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) should examine where there is space within or beyond ERGs for Indigenous associates and allies to meet. For larger organizations, explore your diversity recruiting best practices to ensure your recruitment pipeline includes colleges and universities with high populations of Indigenous students. When selecting vendors, partner with and source from Indigenous-owned businesses to promote economic development within their communities. These suggestions are just a starting point to the myriad of ways allyship can show up in this space. As we honor Indigenous Peoples' Day, let’s commit to ongoing education, collaboration, and respect for Indigenous cultures as we foster belonging for our Indigenous colleagues. Together, we can create a workplace that not only acknowledges but celebrates the rich tapestry of voices that contribute to our shared success. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Allyship #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality #Equity #DEI #DEIB #Belonging #InclusionMatters #Culture #Workplace #WorkplaceCulture #CelebrateDiversity #HR #Inclusivity #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

On Yom Kippur (beginning at sunset today, Friday, October 11, and ending at sundown on Saturday, October 12), “Jews are called upon to disconnect themselves as much as possible from the everyday activities of life to focus their hearts and minds on their personal connection to God. “Also known as the Day of Atonement, is a Jewish holiday dedicated to coming together in community to reflect, ask forgiveness for wrongdoings committed during the past year, and resolve to do better going forward. Yom Kippur has been regarded as the most important, solemn, and holy day in the annual Jewish calendar for millennia.” Be aware that your Jewish employees, friends, and colleagues may request leave from work or work from home today to observe the holiday. Poorly managed conflict affects up to 48% of employees' relationships with colleagues and 50% of individuals' sense of belonging at work. Gallup also found that employees who report frequent conflict in their work environment are more than 20% less engaged compared to those who work in supportive, low-conflict environments. Knowing the impact of these statistics, our team offers four simple actions that can make a significant difference in the way conflict is experienced within their teams. While June is often associated with Pride Month, October is equally important as we celebrate LGBT+ History Month. This is a time to honor the contributions and history of the LGBTQIA+ community. Though some countries observe this month at different times, the choice of October is rooted in significant historical events. LGBT History Month was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher. In a bold move, Wilson came out to his students while teaching about the Holocaust to emphasize his personal connection to the individuals targeted during the genocide. At a time when being openly gay, particularly in the workplace, was still very risky - marked by policies like “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” - Wilson’s actions were groundbreaking. October was chosen to coincide with National Coming Out Day which is October 11. As we reflect this month, it's important to recognize the significant contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the workplace and all facets of society. Thanks to pioneers like Rodney Wilson and the countless advocates, we can continue learning, advocating, and becoming better allies. Let’s use this opportunity to educate ourselves and support inclusion, equity, and respect for all in the workplace and beyond. #LGBTHistoryMonth #LGBTQIA #InclusionMatters #Inclusion #Diversity #DEI #DEIB #Belonging #Community #HR #Leadership #Equality #Equity #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

As we recently posted a reminder about this year’s Jewish High Holidays that begin with Rosh Hashana today, Wednesday, October 2nd, it’s helpful to remember these days are about more than leave requests or adjusted work schedules from your Jewish employees. It’s also about what these important holidays mean now and throughout the year for those who observe. In particular, the High Holy Days – as illustrated in the renewal of Rosh Hashanah, the somber reflection of Yom Kippur – as well as the joyous celebrations in Sukkot and Simchat Torah, offer a means to remember that time is itself healing and restorative. As such, the High Holy Days and the holiday season in Tishrei help to mark the year in meaningful ways and highlight the collective responsibility we all have toward one another. https://lnkd.in/e6wtiMXv #EmployeeEngagement #Holidays #RoshHashanah #Culture #HR #DEI #WorkplaceCulture #Workplace #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Equality #Belonging #DEIB #InclusionMatters #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether
