I’m thrilled to share that our invited literature review, "Phenotyping strategies and genetic background of dairy cattle behavior in intensive production systems – from trait definition to genomic selection ," has been published in the Journal of Dairy Science! In this review, we: 🔸 Provide an overview of the most common indicators of dairy cattle behavior 🔸 Summarize the main methods used for analyzing animal behavior in commercial settings 🔸 Describe the genetic and genomic background of previously defined behavioral traits 🔸 Discuss strategies for breeding and improving these traits 🔸 Highlight future opportunities for genetic selection to improve behavioral responses I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing team on this project! 💭 🐄 🧬 I invite you to read the review and share your thoughts: https://lnkd.in/gd54bWSi Rick Obrian Hernandez Jessica Pempek Luiz Brito

I am pleased to share this exciting news with my network! Our paper on sensitivity analysis of the INRA feeding system has successfully passed the final review process of the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS). While the article is still in its final proof stage, it can already be found on the article in press page. Our research aims to develop an effective sensitivity analysis method for a feeding system in which multiple variables are interconnected in complex, nonlinear ways. In this paper, we describe how both local and global sensitivity analyses were applied simultaneously and present the resulting outcomes. For fellow researchers interested in applying this method to their own work, we have also included an R script for local and global analysis as a supplementary file. With this paper, my first project has officially come to an end. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Pierre, Sophie, Tristan, and Anne-Cécile for their support in helping me complete this journey. I am on a new path in data science, focusing on methane analysis. I look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.

New research from the UBC AWP: “Early Pain Experiences in Dairy Calves and Their Impact on Pain Sensitivity Later in Life” by Zimbábwe Osório-Santos, Thomas Ede, Maria José Hötzel, Daniel Weary, Marina von Keyserlingk This study investigated whether disbudding—a routine, yet painful procedure performed on calves within the first few days of life—could influence pain sensitivity later in their development. The findings suggest that early-life painful procedures may alter general pain thresholds in calves later in life. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gn-bpSvr

Our latest research, now published in the Journal of Dairy Science #JDS, "Long-term effects of #transition_milk feeding on feed intake, growth performance, feeding behavior, and oxidative status of Holstein #calves," found no long-term advantages of feeding transition milk (TRANS) on growth or #oxidative_status. The study highlighted the development of oxidative homeostasis in calves during the first weeks of life, which remained stable through to puberty. https://lnkd.in/ee5vE5q9 #UniversityofBonn #CalfNutrition #OxidativeStress #calfHealth #Germany

The end of summer brings with it a downward shift in colostrum production on dairy farms. This seasonal shift is more than just a casual, on-farm observation. Two #JournalofDairyScience studies (https://lnkd.in/g3A2deps + https://lnkd.in/ggwFD8xJ) from WSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine teams examine #colostrum output during the fall months. https://lnkd.in/eAzEiEfY

I am thrilled to share that my first first-author manuscript titled "Fat composition in milk replacer modulates plasma cholesterol of dairy calves" was published in JDS Communications! In this study we evaluated milk replacers formulated using different fat blends and found that the inclusion of palm or rapeseed fats to the milk replacer increases calf plasma cholesterol. I want to thank my supervisors, Dr. Juliette Wilms and Dr. Leonel N. Leal for the guidance, my advisor, Dr. Marcos Marcondes, for all the support and opportunity, and all the other collaborators in the Trouw Nutrition Netherlands Research and Development team, especially Dr. Icaro Rodrigues.
