Executive Vice President at Advanced Energy Industries, Inc.

With the rise of cloud-based AI services like ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot, demand for space in cloud computing data centers is skyrocketing. The stage is set for 2024-2025 hyperscale data center leasing to set another record, eclipsing the record leasing seen in 2023 after a wave of AI demand hit the data center market. According to Synergy Research Group, AI helped drive enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure to almost $8 billion worldwide in the second quarter of 2024, up by a whopping 22% compared with a year ago. In fact, what is inhibiting the global data center market’s growth is a continued worldwide power shortage. Sourcing power is a top priority for operators across all regions and continuing to improve power density and efficiency of servers, switches, storage and racks is critical. This year’s OCP Summit theme, “From Ideas to Impact,” shows the organization’s focus on turning creative ideas into practical solutions that make a real difference. We’re proud that Harry Soin has been re-elected to lead the OCP Rack and Power project, which has been a passion of his for many years! You can meet Harry and the AE team at OCP Summit from October 15 to 17 and ask them how AE is transforming the Open Compute standards discussions into real-world deployments such as the ORv3 rack and associated power shelf, power supplies and controllers.

Medical devices need dependable power supplies to protect and provide lifesaving care to patients, never more so when it comes to devices that come into contact with the heart or bloodstream. Shrinidhi Chandrasekharan's post describes these Cardiac Floating requirements, the strictest of the applied parts classifications.

In the medical device industry, safety is paramount—especially for equipment that comes into direct contact with patients, and even more so when the heart or bloodstream is involved. These are referred to as Cardiac Floating (CF) rated, the most stringent classification for applied parts in medical devices. A medical device's power supply design must comply with isolation, leakage and ground requirements. One option is to use a medically approved DC-DC converter for a second isolation stage, another is to use an isolation transformer between the mains AC input and the power supply. The optimal solution however, for CF-rated medical devices, is a power supply specifically designed and certified to have the required spacing, patient leakage current and CF isolation. These power supplies are designed to meet stringent safety standards, ensuring minimal leakage current and exceptional isolation to protect patients and ensure device reliability. Devices like dialysis machines, defibrillators, and surgical equipment that interact directly with the heart or bloodstream must meet CF classification to minimize the risk of electric shock and ensure reliable, uninterrupted operation. We understand the importance of patient safety and reliability, and our commitment to quality reflects that. Whether you’re developing a new medical device or upgrading existing equipment, choosing the right power supply is critical. CF-rated power supplies are the gold standard for applications that demand the highest levels of safety and performance. If you haven’t seen our recent announcement of the SL Power NCF150 CF-rated medical power supply, read more details here bit.ly/3BanRs3
