Women’s History Month gives us the opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the next generation of women in health care. Barbara Fernandez Vazquez’s journey into the medical field started in high school. Now, at just 18 years old, she’s making a life-saving impact in AdventHealth Winter Park's emergency department. As the AdventHealth for Women and AdventHealth for Children Health Navigation team celebrates its 10th anniversary, we reflect on a decade of dedicated service and innovation that has transformed the way women, children, and families receive healthcare. This milestone marks not only the success of the program, but also the commitment of the team to provide personalized and compassionate care to our community.

AdventHealth Care Crew volunteers have had a busy start to the year giving back to local nonprofits. They are propelled with purpose to make a difference in our community. When we come together to help others, we can achieve incredible things.

AdventHealth has invested $1.3 million to help renovate The Salvation Army’s 50-year-old men’s and veterans’ shelter in downtown Orlando. The shelter is falling apart, and this much-needed renovation will ensure homeless residents have a safe and dignified place to live and access support. The renovation comes at a time when homelessness is on the rise; in 2024 the organization saw a 38% surge in demand for services and serves as many as 15,000 people every year.

The AdventHealth Orchestra, which consists of team members in diverse roles, recently had the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on President’s Day this year. This occasion marked the Orchestra’s first time being selected in the Capital Orchestra Festival, an exclusive musical celebration that features four orchestras from across the country. “You only get a few opportunities like this in your life to perform with a group like this one,” said Richard Hickam, director of music and the arts at AdventHealth. “It makes you want to slow down time and really be in the moment, to relish in the time, the people, and to do the very best you can.”

In honor of Women’s History Month, we celebrate Beanca Lai, whose dedication and talent inspire both in and out of the hospital. As a registered nurse for cardiologist Dr. Puxiao Cen, Lai has spent 16 years helping patients understand their treatment plan, often answering calls after hours to assist patients in their native language. Born in Hong Kong, Lai speaks Cantonese, Mandarin and English – and a fourth language: dance! When she’s not caring for AdventHealth patients, Lai shines on stage performing Latin dances like salsa and bachata with her troupe at various events, including in Los Angeles, Miami and New York City. #WomensHistoryMonth #TeamMemberTuesday
