Meet Ariana Childs Graham, Program Director for our Road Safety program. Ariana leads efforts to support partners who are driving policy changes that make roads safer for everyone. On her desk, Ariana has a paperweight her partner made that's inspired by the practice of shaving uneven sidewalk edges. The result is safer for pedestrians but also reveals stones in intricate patterns and arrays. It's a reminder to look for beauty in unexpected places. For Ariana, advocacy is “a belief in the possibility of transformation from the now to tomorrow.” #AdvocateDeskDiaries #10YearsofImpact

This #WorldFoodDay, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator proudly joined forces with the Reconciliation and Development Association (RADA), the Healthy Living Alliance | HEALA and Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa, for the regional release of #SweetenedProfits. During this event, advocates and public health leaders came together to spotlight Big Soda’s tactics aimed at undermining sweetened beverage (SB) taxes across the African region. Now more than ever, it’s essential for advocates and policymakers to understand these industry tactics and counter them with strong, effective policies that safeguard public health. Check out the full report and discover how we can stand up to Big Soda's playbook: https://lnkd.in/eU4RUDg8 #PublicHealth #HealthEquity #Policy

Every child deserves access to healthy, nutritious food and schools are a key provider of these meals. Last week, GHAI’s partner, the Healthy Living Alliance | HEALA), hosted a two-day Schools Food Environment Assembly, bringing together experts, policymakers and activists to discuss improving school food environments in South Africa. The event explored critical topics such as the role of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), the impact of childhood diet on health and how to create sustainable, healthier school food systems.

⭐ Program Spotlight: Prevent Epidemics ⭐ As part of our work to #PreventEpidemics, GHAI is proud to share our ongoing collaboration with the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development (LISDEL) to sustainably strengthen health security in Nigeria. This work builds upon the successful advocacy campaigns in the two most populous states, Kano and Lagos, which secured dedicated funding for epidemic preparedness and response. To track Nigeria’s epidemic preparedness budget allocation and disbursement, we are currently working on the health security financing accountability framework and have secured crucial data from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control to finalize it. By working closely with government agencies, lawmakers and international partners, we're making significant strides in strengthening the country's accountability to respond to public health emergencies. #10yearsofImpact

📢 In Brazil, the School Feeding Observatory (ÓAÊ) launched its campaign to spotlight the urgent need for increased funding for the country’s national school feeding program, Pnae. Pnae has lost 42 percent of its purchasing power over the last 14 years, creating a critical need to address a massive budget deficit that prevents thousands of students from accessing daily meals essential for their learning. For many vulnerable communities, this budget gap is more than just a number; it impacts students’ access to food, attendance and performance. Budget advocacy is essential to empower schools to consistently provide nutritious meals, regardless of economic disparities. That’s why ÓAÊ is advocating for a bill to adjust the Pnae budget annually based on inflation – to ensure the school meals program remains adequately funded for years to come. Working with the Department of Child Affairs within the Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs of Vietnam and the Vietnam Journalist Association, GHAI's Huyen Doan and Giang Bui hosted two specialized journalism workshops for 60 northern and southern journalists this week. The workshops highlighted the child drowning burden, misunderstanding of drowning and preventive measures through teamwork activities and discussion panels. Journalists also worked together to explore innovative approaches for delivering more impactful media coverage on this pressing issue. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to empowering local media to act, ensuring that these life-saving messages about drowning prevention reach every corner. Together, we are laying the foundation for a safer future. #ChildDrowningPrevention #Vietnam #JournalismWorkshop

Children in Uganda face daily risks of death and injury while commuting to school, a tragic reality shared by young people worldwide. As the most vulnerable group impacted by road crashes, Uganda’s children are no exception to this global crisis. Hovita Uganda produced their report, "Global Review on Road Traffic Safety and Successful Establishment of Safe School Zones", to help cultivate the support of government officials for safe school zones in Uganda. Working together, they seek to implement infrastructure changes such as “zebra-crossings” and reduced speed limits in surrounding areas. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with HOVITA to drive progress for #RoadSafety.
