  • Our partner, the Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM), in collaboration with Vision Zero, held a press conference in Kyiv to present findings from a nationwide seatbelt study. The study reveals that over half of Ukrainian drivers still don't wear seatbelts. However, this trend is improving. Compared to last year (https://lnkd.in/egmiV3ed), the number of drivers buckling up has risen by 5.84 percent. When the study began in 2017 (https://lnkd.in/egGDMT44), only 15 percent of drivers wore seatbelts. This year, that number has reached 45.97 percent. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/e6fSU2VJ

  • Vaccines save lives, yet they come at a price to several stakeholders. Donors fulfil their commitments for crucial vaccines. Governments in low- and middle-income countries struggle among competing priorities, leaving communities vulnerable to disease outbreaks. But often, low immunization coverage is a result of lack of information, inappropriate planning and red tape in decision -making circles. Local civil society organizations are stepping into the breach to encourage governments to act resolutely and timeously. On this new and challenging terrain, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator, with the support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has been providing strategic guidance to civil society partners on the ground to re-center immunization on governments’ health security agenda. Here are some highlights of what we’ve accomplished in our first four focus countries working with local partners—Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Madagascar. The work is a beacon for our next cohort of civil society partners taking up the challenge in Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, Laos and Zambia.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility or Distraction? Big Soda often positions itself as a good corporate citizen, highlighting their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. But while they promote environmental and social efforts, they continue producing sugary drinks that fuel NCDs like diabetes and obesity. CSR can sometimes be a smokescreen—an attempt to distract from the real harm these products cause. It’s time to see beyond the PR campaigns and focus on policies that truly benefit public health. • Meet Ela D.—a Program Associate with our Food and Nutrition team. Ela has been with us for almost a year, managing key program logistics like travel, event planning, program progress reports, outcome indicators trackers, onboarding materials for new employees and more to support the program, the team and our advocates.    One special item on Ela's desk is a postcard she picked up from Kenya, where she helped coordinate a strategic planning meeting with local partners in East Africa—her first work trip with GHAI. Meeting partners and in-country coordinators in person whom she had only interacted with on Zoom and WhatsApp brought a new perspective to her work. That moment reinforced the impact of bringing people together to collaborate on life-saving public health policies.     To Ela, advocacy means "using your own voice and resources to empower others to do the same."    #AdvocateDeskDiaries #10YearsofImpact

  • What do overdose prevention, improving food and nutrition and tobacco control have in common? They all require concerted effort to reduce the negative health, social and legal impacts of harmful behaviors and corporate actors. We provided inputs to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, for her report “Harm Reduction for Sustainable Peace and Development." Learn more about how GHAI is contributing to the global conversation around harm reduction in our newest blog. https://bit.ly/48pF90V

Recently, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator, in collaboration with the Department of Child Affairs and the Vietnam Journalist Association, hosted impactful workshops for journalists in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to advocate for drowning prevention. With guidance from experts from GHAI, the World Health Organization and local authorities, 60 journalists explored life-saving strategies and how to elevate drowning prevention in public discourse. As journalists embrace their role as advocates, they’re empowered to shape public opinion and drive policy change—building a safer future for Vietnam's children.
