Alexis Ohanian Sr., our Brand Genius honoree, revolutionized online communities with Reddit. Can he do the same for women's sports? ATHLOS is a first-of-its-kind track competition created by Ohanian that aims to reimagine the oldest sport in the world—in part by placing women athletes at its center. Like Reddit, Inc., the venture is a gamble on the future, a thesis whose returns—if they materialize at all—could be decades in the making. “In sports, so many decisions are determined by past precedent, doing things the way they have always been done,” Ohanian said. “In the world of tech startups, if you think that way, you fail. With Athlos, we are questioning every element and building the best version of the product possible.” Read the full cover story by Mark Stenberg here: https://adweek.it/3MSk9FW 📸: Ryan Duffin

JCPenney has brought in Marisa Thalberg as a consulting chief marketing officer (CMO) to fill the role that has been vacant since early 2023. Thalberg, who joined the retailer on Tuesday, previously served as chief marketing and communications officer at United Parks & Resorts, the parent company of theme park brands including Aquatica, Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, SeaWorld, and Sesame Place, since April 2023. Thalberg told ADWEEK: “The best careers involve challenging yourself — in my case across industries. For me, what has remained consistent is that I am drawn to great American brands that need and deserve renewed salience and momentum.” She said JCPenney was one such brand: “It’s been a fixture in American culture for over 120 years. While it’s been through a number of evolutions, when I first went back into a store it really surprised me in many good ways. That experience is the opportunity I want to more broadly convey.”
