A co-op with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration led to Katie Scancarello’s passion for geotechnical engineering. After getting her master’s in the subject, she began her career in Ohio and moved to Rhode Island to discover a different part of the country and establish a geotechnical engineering presence in the Northeast. “Be yourself and get out there,” Katie says. “Our industry is receptive and supportive of women. Men can be great sponsors/mentors and there are women-focused groups for every field that provide a ton of resources and support.” Read more about Katie’s career journey here: https://lnkd.in/end9PFp7 #AECOM #CareerPaths #Water #Tunneling #WomenInTunneling

This week’s People Spotlight features Antony Gibbon, technical director for major projects from our Water and Environment business lines in Manchester, United Kingdom. Starting out as an engineer working on highway projects, Antony soon shifted to focus on flood resilience projects for local and national government. As he grew to appreciate the environmental and social benefits of this work, he further expanded his role to take on the design and delivery of water and wastewater projects — including utilities diversions for one of London’s largest rail stations. “I especially enjoyed projects where I used my skill and knowledge to reduce flood risk while also improving public accesses to the restored environment,” he writes. “39 years later, I’m still thinking about ways to improve people’s lives and the environment.” Read more about Antony’s career: https://lnkd.in/evai5bXv #AECOM #PeopleSpotlight

It’s great to see Bangladeshi architect and educator Marina Tabassum and her firm, Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA), have been selected to design the 2025 Serpentine Pavilion in London, UK. “We’re excited to work with Marina and her team on this year’s pavilion,” said our Director Jon Leach announcing AECOM's involvement on the project for the thirteenth year. The 2025 Pavilion is elongated in the north-south direction and features a central court that aligns with Serpentine South’s bell tower. Central to Tabassum’s design is a kinetic element where one of the capsule forms is able to move and connect, transforming the Pavilion into a new space. “With its tight timescales and unique engineering challenges, the Pavilion project is always particularly rewarding for our team of engineers and project managers. We look forward to working with the Serpentine and the rest of the team to bring this year’s Pavilion to life,” Jon continues. The Serpentine Pavilion began in 2000 with Dame Zaha Hadid and has presented the first UK structures by some of the most significant names and emerging talents in international architecture. Throughout the Summer and until October, the Serpentine Pavilion 2025 will become a platform for Serpentine’s live and events program. Strong mentorship helped shape Project Engineer Amanda Foote, P.E.’s tunneling career in the U.S. West region. Starting out without much experience in trenchless construction, Amanda’s manager and mentor, David Mast, P.E., a vice president in our Water business line, took the time to explain every aspect of the field, made sure she was part of pivotal meetings, and brought her onto various projects. Amanda has since become a leader in the tunneling world, serving as everything from design engineer to deputy project manager on major projects in the Midwest. “Ask for what you want. It’s OK to not know everything. If you are not sure, ask! Chances are someone else has the same question,” Amanda writes. We're thrilled to congratulate the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) on the creation of the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI). As a non-profit, multi-stakeholder governed initiative, its aim is to provide communities, investors, the mining industry and other interested stakeholders with confidence that effective measures are being put in place to prevent future tailings failures. The institute will oversee a process for an assessment of the level of conformance for a specific tailings facility against all 77 Requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). As the Brazil Independent Technical, Environmental and Social Auditors for the most extensive and established Independent Audit Program of tailing storage facilities (TSF) globally, we are committed to providing independent conformance assessments to better secure the safety of mines and livability of the surrounding communities.
