The Thames Tideway Tunnel, London's ambitious new super sewer project to prevent sewage overflows, has now been turned on. The project is a 25km super sewer running mainly under the tidal River Thames from Hammersmith in the West to Abbey Mills in East of London and is designed to intercept existing overflows that discharge into the river and transfer them to a deep tunnel running under the Thames. These will be pumped out and treated at Beckton Sewage Treatment Works and released back into the Thames Estuary. The project divided into three main Works Sections: West, Central and East. AECOM acted as Lead Designer for main Contractor FLO (Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke JV) in delivering the design for eight main works sites on the central section of the tunnel and 12.5km of 7.2m internal diameter main tunnel. Design work includes civil, structural, marine, mechanical, electrical, architecture and geotechnical, ecology and heritage. We worked with FLO to ensure strong technical governance during design and construction, supporting stakeholder approvals and taking the design through a gated assurance process with Tideway. Imagine a building that restores and regenerates natural systems and even metabolizes like a living organism. That’s the aim of regenerative design — a new approach to tackling both the biodiversity and climate crises.   Read more from our Sustainability Director, Dave Cheshire, on the 7 key principles of this innovative method of building design: https://lnkd.in/emuxJsyM   #AECOM #RegenerativeDesign #Biodiversity

Laura Ducamp has over a decade of experience in the energy sector, with experience from a wide range of projects all over the world, from Papua New Guinea to China, India and Mexico. Today, she works as an ESG practice lead based in Bordeaux, France, coordinating our ESG scope of services, including ESG performance and ratings, sustainability strategies, renewable energy technologies and more.    Laura supports major companies in achieving their net zero goals — and advocates for the implementation of sustainable practices internally at AECOM as well. She is currently working with Climate Fresk, a non-government organization based in France, to train more than 200 employees from our France and Benelux offices, educating and empowering them to explore concrete ways that we can reduce our impact.    Read more about her work: https://lnkd.in/d7245UQ5   #AECOM #AECOMVoices

We’re excited to share our selection by Region of Peel, Ontario to provide program management services for the Queen Street Housing Enabling Infrastructure Program (HEIP). This initiative aims to build the necessary wastewater and water linear infrastructure to support the development of housing mandated under Bill 23, which includes Ontario’s goal to build 1.5 million units by 2031. Our teams will deliver an array of work for the program, including planning, designing, and implementing new water and wastewater systems to ensure residents have safe and reliable drinking water and wastewater services that meet the accelerated growth and housing demands in Peel. “We are proud to partner with Peel Region on this groundbreaking program, accelerating infrastructure delivery while safeguarding the public and advancing more sustainable cities,” said Drew Jeter, chief executive of our Program Management global business line. In this week’s Deep Dive, we hear from Doug Bellomo, a flood risk management expert from our global Water business line, based in Arlington, Virginia.     Doug has decades of experience in flood risk management and emergency services. From his previous tenure at FEMA and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), he joined AECOM to pursue his interest in private sector innovations that help shape public policy.  In 2020, as part of the COMPASS Joint Venture, he and his team collaborated with FEMA to study how disaster-resilient building codes can prevent direct losses caused by earthquakes, flooding and hurricane winds. As part of this project, he and his team developed an analytical framework from a database of 18 million buildings, the hazard frequency in each locality, and the type of building code in effect at the time — and discovered that as much as 65 percent of U.S. counties do not have modern building codes. The study was used to create user-friendly materials that can help inform state and local governments and policymakers on the importance of adopting and enforcing disaster-resilient building codes to reduce the risk of damage and economic losses, protect lives and ensure faster recovery in the aftermath of disasters.    Take a closer look at Doug's work: https://lnkd.in/eY_SkV5i   #AECOM #DeepDive #Sustainability #Environment #Water

With more than 20 years of experience in utility management, Kaye Bealer has worked with major municipal clients across the U.S. to support them with financial planning, operational analysis and more. She is currently an associate vice president of strategic client services with our Water business, connecting our clients with crucial digital information tools to help them achieve their sustainability goals.    One of her favorite projects has been working with ALCOSAN — Allegheny County Sanitary Authority, Pennsylvania — to improve their sewer infrastructure management. Kaye and her team worked with ALCOSAN to incorporate regionalized assets into their Capital Improvement Plan, using an AI-based approach to improve the speed and accuracy of sewer inspection programs while also integrating equity into their needs assessments and asset management processes.    Read more about her work: https://lnkd.in/e9v9gMNj   #AECOM #AECOMVoices

We’re excited to announce our selection by the TCTA (Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority) for consultancy services for the development of the Smithfield Dam and associated infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This critical work is part of the uMkhomazi Water Project Phase One (uMWP-1), which involves the storage and transfer of around 220 million cubic meters per year of raw water via construction of an 81-meter-high earth core rockfill dam and a 26-meter-high earth core rockfill saddle dam. Our role will span project management, design engineering, construction supervision and environmental compliance — extending our track record of delivering significant dam building projects in the region. “uMWP-1 is one of the largest water supply programs in South Africa in recent years and presents a significant opportunity to strengthen the local industry and economy,” said Hamed Zaghw, chief executive of AECOM’s Middle East and Africa region. “We look forward to delivering on TCTA’s ambitious community involvement priorities for this project and will deploy a structured process for empowerment, including skills development of previously disadvantaged people and companies.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKZR5u9P #AECOM #SouthAfrica #Water #AECOMMiddleEast AECOM - Water #SmithfieldDam #uMkhomaziWaterProject #BetterWorld #WeDeliver
