I was honored to participate in a blessing and ribbon-cutting celebration marking the completion of AES Hawai'i’s Kuihelani solar plus storage project on Maui. This is The AES Corporation’s first solar-plus-storage facility on the island. The event included a blessing ceremony at the project site and a reception at the nearby Maui Arts and Cultural Center that had a wonderful “pau hana” feel to it. The Kuihelani project delivers reliable, affordable and flexible #cleanenergy to reduce Maui’s dependence on fossil fuels, to help ensure a resilient power grid, and to provide clean, affordable energy so help support Maui’s recovery from the devastating fires of 2023. Kuihelani fulfills about 15% of Maui’s energy needs at a cost of $0.08/kWh – one of the lowest rates in the state for renewable energy. The Kuihelani project is forecasted to avoid 2 million barrels of fossil fuel consumption for electricity generation over its 25-year project lifespan. The project also provides an estimated economic impact of $68 million to the island and supported 294 good-paying jobs during construction. And thanks to its battery storage element, Kuihelani can store #cleanenergy generated at the facility during the day to be used at night, or during times of peak demand when the grid is stressed. Kuihelani is also a “dual use” facility, where agricultural land uses such as sheep grazing continue through our partnership with Hoʻoulu ʻĀina Farms. I want to thank Maui Maui County Mayor Honorable Richard T. Bissen; Hawaiian Electric President and CEO Shelee Kimura; Leo Asuncion from the Hawai’i PUC; Hawai’i State Senators Lynn DeCoite and Angus McKelvey, Representative Tyson Miyake; Maui Council Members, including chair Alice Lee; Kahu Kimokeo Kapahulehua (who performed the ceremonial blessing); and landowners Grant Nakama and Mahi Pono for participating in this great event and supporting this important project. My real appreciation goes to AES Hawai'i’i Market Leader Sandra Larsen and the entire AES Hawai'i team for their hard work in bringing the Kuihelani solar plus storage project to completion. Together, we’re accelerating the future of energy. #cleanenergy #solarenergy #energystorage
