  • The ongoing 30th Nigeria Economic Summit (NES) has brought critical national issues into focus, one of which is the state of Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector. A major session, titled “Is the Market Ready for Increased Local Manufacturing of Medicines?” examined the challenges and opportunities within the industry. As Nigeria continues with a healthcare system heavily reliant on imports, the Panel discussion highlighted the urgent need to foster local manufacturing to achieve self-reliance and safeguard public health. Buttressing the current state of the Nigerian pharmaceutical market - an import-dependent, with approximately 70% of its medicines sourced from abroad, leaving the country vulnerable to global disruptions, the Panel session moderated by Dr. Mariya Saleh - Thematic Group leader - Public Health NESG HPC, discussed multiple levels of synergy as essential to unlocking funding opportunities, improving supply chain management, and ensuring regulatory efficiency. With Nigeria well-positioned to leverage regional trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), there is a growing urgency for action. Despite recent policy interventions, including the executive order signed by President Tinubu in June 2024, aimed to promote local production were touched on, significant barriers persist. Dr. Abdu Mukhtar - National Coordinator for unlocking health value chain initiative graciously complimented the session with a one on one conducted by Dr. Ayodele Cole Benson NESG HPC Thematic Group leader for Health as a Business and shared great insights about the current work of PVAC, highlights the enhancement of local manufacturing capacity as a major pillar in its areas of significant focus. At the session, Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.) the CEO of the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth) delivered the closing remarks, earmarking the importance of public-private collaboration to address these challenges, focusing on the need to align government policies with private sector investments. The session also highlighted the urgency of capacity-building programs to enhance technical expertise, ensuring that locally manufactured medicines meet international standards. Optimizing the domestic market to support local producers was another key focus. Improved market conditions will reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and enhance healthcare access for millions. With the right policy frameworks, Nigeria could position itself as a pharmaceutical hub, driving exports across the continent through AfCFTA. In all, the combined discussions provided a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in strengthening Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry and underscored the need for collaborative frameworks where government, the private sector, and international partners work together to build a sustainable pharmaceutical ecosystem.
