THE RISE OF TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE OF HAITI. François Dominique Toussaint Louverture, also known by the names Toussaint L'Ouverture and Toussaint Bréda, was a Haitian general and the most influential leader of the Haitian Revolution. Born on May 20th, 1743, Toussaint played a crucial role in leading the Haitian people to victory against their oppressors and establishing Haiti as an independent nation. Born into slavery in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti), Toussaint Louverture was a devout Catholic and eventually earned his freedom as an "affranchi", a freed slave. After becoming a free man, Toussaint went on to work as an overseer on his former master's plantation, eventually earning enough to purchase slaves of his own. Throughout this period he identified as a Creole and embraced the culture and traditions of his homeland. Toussaint Louverture was a late bloomer when it came to military leadership, as he was nearly 50 years old when the Haitian Revolution broke out. Initially, he served as a lieutenant to Georges Biassou, an early leader in the War for Freedom in Saint-Domingue. In the beginning, Toussaint formed an alliance with the Spanish in neighboring Santo Domingo, but later switched his allegiance to the French when they abolished slavery in their colonies. Throughout his life, Toussaint Louverture displayed remarkable strategic skill both on the battlefield and in politics, as he alternately fought alongside Spanish forces against Royalists in Saint-Domingue, joined forces with Republican France, and finally resisted Bonaparte's troops. His leadership transformed the slave rebellion into a full-blown revolution, and for this, he is now remembered as one of the founding fathers of Haiti, along with Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Toussaint Louverture's military and political successes provided the foundation for the eventual victory of the Haitian army, even though he died before the final, most brutal phase of the Haitian Revolution. The French army, already weakened by yellow fever and defeated in multiple battles by the Haitians, finally capitulated and withdrew from Saint-Domingue in 1803, the same year of Louverture's death. The revolution continued under his lieutenant Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who declared the independence of Haiti on January 1st, 1804, officially establishing the sovereign state of Haiti.

Chad🇹🇩 plays a pivotal role in Hungary's plans as Prime Minister Viktor Orban moves to deploy troops, highlighting the country’s importance in curbing African migration to Europe. While Orban focuses on security, analysts point to economic interests, including Chad’s oil and gold. Critics doubt its effectiveness, but the EU supports Hungary’s Sahel involvement.
