🚨ATTENTION ARTISTS🚨 This dispute highlights a point I always preach to Artists: ALWAYS SIGN AGREEMENTS IN ALL YOUR WORKING RELATIONSHIPS! (Preferably before you start working while cool heads prevail) A contract helps to ensure that: 1. All the terms of the business arrangement are clearly outlined, 2. All parties deliver what was initially agreed, 3. The agreement terms happen as initially agreed and contractually stated at the end of the day regardless of what disagreements arise. 4. That should any part breach the agreement there is recourse for the other affected parties It unprofessional to have public disagreements about business related matters. It hurts your brand and your business. For music business consultancy services including contracts services consult us here: https://lnkd.in/dGp8RueH https://lnkd.in/dTiNAKep

🚨 ATTENTION ARTISTS 🚨 🎸 An Important Learning Moment 🎷 An interesting discussion on Podcast And Chill With MacG on Publishing and Master Rights. Just to clear up a few things which all artists need to understand: 🎶 There are two copyrights in a song:- ** The Copyright in The Composition, and ** The Copyright in The Recording (also known as the Master) 🎷 The Copyright in The Composition 🎷 🎶 This copyright is owned by the songwriter(s) or the composer(s). This is anyone who contributed in the creation of the song either by creating lyrics or creating the melody and harmony, this includes what is known today as "the beat". Owners of this copyright can sell their rights (e.g. a beat maker can sell their beats thereby transferring ownership to the buyer). 🎶 The administrative process of collecting The Copyright in The Composition royalties and distribution to the owners is known in the industry as Publishing. The copyrights are also referred to as "Publishing Rights" in the industry. 🎤 The Copyright in The Recording🎤 🎶 This copyright is owned by whoever used their resources (studio, equipment, etc.) or funded the creation process of the recording also known in the industry as the Master. Usually this would be the Record Label or the Producer, or the Recording Artist. 🎶 NOTE! This copyright is limited to the master file that was created meaning if the song is recorded by another entity then they own the copyrights to that master they created. 🎶 SO WHO REALLY OWNS THE SONG? 🎶 🎷 Answer - The songwriter(s)/composer(s) as they also hold the Ethical Rights which allows them to say who can or cannot record the song. To learn more about Music Copyrights, how to make money out of them and how to make money in the modern music industry check out my book: MONETIZING YOUR MUSIC COPYRIGHTS AND BEYOND. 💡 Did You Know? There Are Over $400 Million in Uncollected Mechanical Royalties! 🎶 One of the biggest misconceptions among artists is that their Performing Rights Organization (PRO) like ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, or SAMRO collects all their songwriting royalties. The truth? They don’t. PROs only handle performance royalties, which means they don't collect the largest piece of the pie: Mechanical Royalties. These royalties are generated every time your music is streamed, sold, or reproduced, and they can only be collected through proper publishing administration. Without a publishing administrator, you risk leaving significant money on the table—money that’s rightfully yours. 💡 And here’s a crucial fact: After three years, uncollected mechanical royalties expire. 💡 That means if your songs have been out for a while, time is running out to claim what’s yours. That’s why we emphasize the importance of publishing administration. Don’t let your hard-earned money go unclaimed. Make sure you’re set up to collect all your royalties! We offer comprehensive publishing and catalog administration services. Click here for more info: https://lnkd.in/dKVfK-sn #MusicBusiness #Songwriting #Royalties #PublishingAdmin #ArtistTips

Congratulations! I would advise you to watch the space in Africa. The modern industry has brought a lot of accessibility to the global market that we otherwise simply didn't have before. As Africans we always find a way some how to disrupt the status quo in ways thought unthinkable. I believe the next disruption of the industry will come from Africa. Watch the space!
Warner Chappell Music Co-Chairs Guy Moot & Carianne Marshall sit down with HITS Magazine to discuss the last five years at helm of the publisher, from major signings including Dua Lipa, Zach Bryan, and Benson Boone, catalog deals including the estates of Tom Petty and David Bowie, growing market share, and what's next on the horizon.
