⚠️ OUTBREAK: FDA, USDA-FSIS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections. A specific ingredient has not yet been confirmed as the source of the outbreak, but most sick people report eating a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger varieties. https://lnkd.in/gu57niJh Investigators are working to determine if the slivered onions or beef patties on Quarter Pounder burgers are the likely source of contamination. McDonald’s stores affected in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have temporarily stopped using Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties. • Three Essential Food Safety Tips for Farmers Growing Ready-to-Eat Produce 🌱 If you’re a farmer growing produce that’s ready to eat straight from the field, food safety is more important than ever. A small mistake can have big consequences, but with the right practices in place, you can ensure your produce reaches consumers fresh and safe. Here are three must-know tips to keep your produce at its best: 1. Keep Your Water Clean and Safe Water is your farm’s lifeblood, but it can also be a source of contamination. If your irrigation water isn’t clean, your crops are at risk of carrying dangerous pathogens like E. coli or Salmonella. The solution? Test your water regularly and make sure it meets FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) standards. The health of your crops—and your customers—depends on it. 2. Hygiene is Key The people working on your farm can help keep your produce safe—or they can spread bacteria and viruses like Norovirus without even realizing it. Make sure every worker knows proper handwashing techniques, wears gloves, and stays home if they’re unwell. A small investment in hygiene goes a long way in keeping your harvest safe. 3. Clean Tools, Healthy Crops From the soil to your tools, contamination can come from anywhere. Dirty equipment can undo all the hard work you’ve put into growing safe, fresh produce. Keep your tools, bins, and machinery clean, and regularly sanitize them to prevent harmful bacteria from getting to your crops. By following these practices, you’ll be giving your farm the best chance to produce fresh, safe, ready-to-eat crops that your customers can trust. 🌾 What steps do you take to keep your farm’s produce safe?
