What's so important about roots? To Derek Ver Helst, a certified Technical Service Provider and AgSpire's Senior Conservation Agronomist, the answer is simple: everything. While working with a farmer and rancher enrolled in one of our programs, Derek pulled a soil sample to help analyze what is happening below the soil's surface. As he explains in this video, a plant's roots are so important to help with nutrient cycling, building soil structure and health, and improving water infiltration. AgSpire hosted a panel of experts representing different links in the beef value chain to explore initiatives to advance sustainable management practices and their benefits for ranchers. “Sustainability starts at the calf level – a sustainable (beef) operation needs to be both sustainable with the environment and sustainable with economics...” explained panelist Don Gales, CEO of Friona Industries. Joined by Tim Hardman, Global Sustainability Director for Fulton Market Group, Brady Wulf a MN rancher, and moderator Jared Knock, the group shared a candid look at the challenges and opportunities for the beef industry.
