Capital One is our October #PartnerSpotlight! The company has been a generous AHC donor and partner for nearly 15 years. We’re thankful for Capital One joining us in our mission by supporting AHC’s Resident Services and our affordable housing development. Their team has helped our residents through financial contributions, food drives, providing free Chromebooks and free internet access, and more. "When residents have access to safe, stable and affordable housing, it can provide greater opportunity to achieve financial resilience, save for the future and build wealth,” Desiree Francis, Head of Community Finance at Capital One, said. “Since 2010, Capital One has had the privilege to work with AHC to create or preserve 19 affordable housing developments in the region and support resident services primarily related to financial and digital literacy and access." Thank you, Capital One, for helping us drive change and transform lives!
About us
Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is a community-focused, non-profit affordable housing developer. Since 1975, AHC Inc. has developed more than 50 apartment communities with more than 8,200 affordable apartments in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. AHC also provides extensive educational programs and social services onsite at our apartment communities to enhance residents’ lives – and the communities we serve. AHC prioritizes community-building, equity, and diversity throughout our organization - from thoughtful engagement with the residents we serve to long-time relationships with local government and community partners. Our outstanding real estate track record includes innovative development strategies, award-winning architectural design, cutting-edge environmental solutions, and long-time partnerships and quality developments that strengthen neighborhoods and local economies. AHC’s nationally recognized Resident Services program initiated nearly 30 years ago, is helping build stronger futures for more than 3,000 children, youth, and adults who live in our affordable housing communities through education programs, social services, community partnerships, and access to local support. Our team has earned the industry-leader CORES certification, which recognizes AHC’s ongoing commitment to the highest standards for resident services. Volunteer opportunities include working with elementary students in our Afterschool or Summer Program and teens in our Tutoring and College and Career Readiness Programs. We are proud that 100% of the students in our education programs have graduated from high school, with the majority going to college - most the first in their families to achieve this life-changing milestone. We’re excited to share that we’re launching an innovative program called Dyslexic Edge Academy with partners Dyslexic Edge, the Booz Allen Foundation, and the IMSE Orton-Gillingham. This groundbreaking program will provide students in grades 1-3 with critical reading intervention using the IMSE Orton-Gillingham evidence-based reading instruction and the Dyslexic Edge state-of-the-art STEM enrichment in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where they can develop academic, social, and personal skills. “This exciting partnership complements our current literacy program by incorporating STEM activities with our young learners,” said Milenka Coronel Samey, Director of Education for AHC. “Adding STEM to our curriculum helps students learn skills that are essential to 21st-century learning, including problem-solving and critical thinking.” Read more about this exciting new program: https://lnkd.in/eY_quWk6.

Last week, we held the 2024 AHC Annual Celebration at The Westerly, our newest community in Washington, D.C. It was a wonderful evening of conversation and connection with our many partners! The event kicked off with tours of the building, giving attendees a glimpse into what it’s like for our residents living at The Westerly. Hilary S. Chapman, AHC Board Vice-Chair, inspired the crowd with insights into our mission and our impact in the community. Patrice Williams, an AHC resident, shared what the community means to her. "Living here at The Westerly has given me a sense of stability, community, and safety," Patrice said. Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, provided organizational updates and thanked AHC's corporate partners for helping drive change and transform lives. A special thank you to Tracy Hadden Loh with the Brookings Metro Center for Transformative Placemaking for her captivating keynote about the importance of transit-oriented housing. Today, we had the pleasure of showing members of the International Housing Partnership (IHP) around The Westerly, our newest community in Washington, D.C. The IHP is a collaborative of nonprofits from Australia (PowerHousing Australia), Canada (Housing Partnership Canada), the United Kingdom (Housing Partnership United Kingdom), and the United States (Housing Partnership Network) that collectively operate one million affordable homes and house more than 2.5 million people. The Westerly, a partnership with Hoffman & Associates, includes 449 apartments, 136 of which are affordable. We enjoyed sharing the community’s wide array of amenity spaces, retail, educational, and cultural options. It was an inspiring morning learning from IHP members from around the world and sharing our community that’s providing critically needed housing and expanded community offerings for Southwest D.C.
