"On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, we congratulate Blue Origin on its successful NS-26 mission. We celebrate Nicolina, Rob, Eugene, Eiman, Karsen, and Ephraim on their inspirational journey. We share the excitement around the NS-26 mission, especially seeing a scientist included in the crew to conduct NASA research onboard. New Shepard missions embody the promises of space for the benefit of Earth. Reusability of space vehicles like New Shepard continues to help decrease the cost of access to space as we see the space economy growing. We applaud AIAA Corporate Member Blue Origin for shaping the future of aerospace," said AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher. #AIAA #aerospace #blueorigin #newshepard #NS26

The team behind NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), built and operated by Johns Hopkins APL, has been honored with the 2024 Space Systems Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at this year’s AIAA ASCEND event. ☄️🌟 https://jhuapl.link/rza The award, presented by the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee, celebrates outstanding achievements in the architecture, analysis, design, and implementation of space systems. The DART team was lauded for “outstanding achievement in the development and operation of the DART spacecraft, completing humanity’s first in-space demonstration of planetary defense technology.” Launched in 2021, the DART spacecraft successfully impacted the asteroid Dimorphos in fall 2022, altering its orbit around its larger companion asteroid, Didymos, by 33 minutes. This historic achievement demonstrated the potential to divert hazardous asteroids, providing a crucial tool for safeguarding Earth from potential impacts. “The success of DART shows what’s possible when science, technology and teamwork unite to tackle challenges for the benefit of humanity,” said APL's Elena Adams, who served as the DART mission systems engineer. “The team navigated multiple obstacles to build and rigorously test the spacecraft for this mission. Watching the spacecraft hit the target head on, and seeing the change in the orbit period a few days later, were the payoff for all that hard work — and we’re still getting valuable science two years later.” #JHUAPL | #AIAA | #ASCENDSpace | #DARTMission | #PlanetaryDefense | #SpaceInnovation | #AerospaceEngineering | NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
