Hospitals and Health Care

Implementing innovative AI solutions for colon cancer diagnostics. EU Horizon 2022 funded #digitalhealth project.

About us

Our mission? Simplify the way we detect colon cancer. We are AI-Supported Image Analysis in Large Bowel Camera Capsule Endoscopy (AICE), a brand new digital health project funded by the EU Horizon Programme. AICE is led by a dynamic team of clinical researchers, epidemiologists, data scientists, digital health experts, health economists, ethics researchers, and communication experts to deliver groundbreaking colon cancer diagnostics technology. We’ve wielded industry-leading artificial intelligence to make the clinical pathway more effective for the Camera Capsule Endoscopy (CCE): a small, pill-shaped capsule equipped with a camera that, when swallowed, takes tens of thousands of pictures of your colon to diagnose cancers speed and accuracy. We envision a world where AI is utilized to create high-quality, patient-centered care. With CCE, patients operate on their own terms. Rather than going through an invasive, unpleasant, and sometimes hazardous procedure like traditional colonoscopy, CCE empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health from the comfort of their own home.

#MadeleineHayenhjelm on AI & Ethics: Insights from Today’s #frAIday Event at Umeå University 🇸🇪 Earlier today, Madeleine Hayenhjelm, who leads the Ethics Work Package for the #AICEProject, delivered a compelling talk entitled “Getting the Ethics of AI Right” as part of the #frAIday series at Umeå University. Held via Zoom and Galaxen, the event was well-attended, sparking thoughtful questions and discussions from both the on-site and online audiences. Madeleine discussed the role of “grey documents” - guidelines from governments, academia, and industry - in shaping ethical AI development. She also highlighted the need to ground these frameworks in philosophical moral theory to address critical gaps in their effectiveness. The talk was a fantastic opportunity to explore the ethical challenges of AI and generated great engagement around this timely and very important topic. Today’s AICE workshop on Ethics and AI was a great success. Dr Madeleine Hayenhjelm offered key insights into crucial topics like responsibility, explainability, and the black box problem in AI-driven healthcare. Dr. Miguel Mascarenhas also highlighted an important challenge: how clinicians may be held accountable for decisions influenced by AI. These discussions are becoming increasingly vital as AI continues to transform healthcare. A big thank you to Madeleine and the AICE team for fostering such an engaging and thought-provoking conversation on these critical ethical issues. #AIethics #AICEProject #HealthcareAI

Today, AICE is hosting a workshop on Ethics and AI! Responsibility: "....clinicians may be asked to take responsibility for decisions they have not made when using a system that incorporates AI." - Dr. Miguel Mascarenhas. We're bringing together clinicians and technical experts to discuss some of the most critical ethical concerns surrounding AI in healthcare. Topics like responsibility, explainability, and the black box problem are high on the agenda. As AI continues to evolve, these ethical questions are becoming even more crucial to address. With experts from across Europe both from the AICE Project and invited experts outside of the project, the workshop today is fostering important conversations around AI's role in healthcare.

Socioeconomic differences in discrepancies between expected and experienced discomfort from colonoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy Our research unit looked into socioeconomic differences in discomfort expectations versur actual experiences during colonoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy. This study aimed to understand how these discrepancies vary across different socioeconomic groups. Here's a glimpse into the findings: 📊 Overview:  The study utilized patient-reported outcomes to compare expected versus experienced discomfort in colonoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy, focusing on socioeconomic disparities. The research incolved a cohort analysis with stratification based on socioeconomic status. 🔍 Key insights:  Lower socioeconomic groups experienced greater discrepancies between expected and actual discomfort. patients from higher socioeconomic backgrounds were better at predicting their discomfort. Colonoscopy discomfort was mor epredictable than that og capsule endoscopy. 💡 Research implications:  Our study provides valuable insights into the role of socioeconomic factors in patient expectations and experiences with medical procedures. Further investigation is needed to reduce disparities in patient care across different socioeconomic groups. 📚 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dWVTigdi
