During #HispanicHeritageMonth, AIG’s Scarlet Caba, CPA thinks back on her career and shares why it’s important to support and motivate others in the workplace and the community.
As Senior Managing Director for Corporate Functions, Scarlet leads a team that identifies and analyzes risks within areas such as AIG’s Human Resources, Legal and Compliance, and Communications, and reviews the risk management controls in place for these corporate functions.
Growing up, Scarlet never envisioned herself being a leader in a corporate environment. Things changed when she had the opportunity to work at a financial services corporation through a high school co-op program for high potential students.
“My Mom was always a big motivator for me,” says Scarlet, whose family immigrated from the Dominican Republic when she was four years old to live in a country with better educational and career opportunities. “She encouraged us to work hard and push ourselves to do our best.”
Scarlet also recalls another ally. Early in her career, a manager empowered her to speak during business meetings and lead conversations.
“During meetings, my manager encouraged me to share my opinions and ideas and gave me the space to do it,” Scarlet says.
Scarlet adds that experiences like these shape how she leads her team today and drives her to give back to the Hispanic community, including working with a local organization to help non-English speakers complete immigration forms through AIG’s Latino Professionals ERG.
“I believe diversity is the key to innovation,” Scarlet says. “Everyone deserves an ally to help them succeed, whether it is in the workplace or community.”
