A new CDC report has traced recent outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease on cruise ships to hot tubs on private balconies. Despite ships following CDC guidelines, Legionella bacteria were found in several private tubs, where water temperatures and less stringent cleaning protocols create ideal conditions for bacterial growth. About us
Founded in 1939, AIHA is a nonprofit organization serving professionals dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control, and confirmation of environmental stressors in or arising from the workplace that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well-being of workers and members of the community. We provide comprehensive education programs and other products and services that help its members maintain the highest professional standards. More than half of the nearly 8,500 members are certified industrial hygienists (CIHs), and many hold other professional designations. AIHA serves as a resource for those employed in the industrial, consulting, academic, and government sectors.

Why are you collecting data, IH edition. On IH assessments, we will get the request to collect data. The problem is that sometimes, operational activities and our visit don’t always line up. Here’s where we fall into a dilemma. The client will say “well we have you here, let’s make something up.” But why? Are you collecting data to put a check in the box which creates an unnecessary exposure that is not representative of the work that is being done to avoid IH sampling fees in the future? What are the consequences? 1. The data gives false confidence in an exposure. What if we find nothing but your employees are actually exposed when they’re doing their job. 2. What if that fabricated scenario results in the implementation of a program, like respiratory protection or hearing conservation? We have tools to help. Even if we can only grab one sample of realistic working conditions, American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has created incredible tactical tools that can help us predict what the exposures could be. Even without a sample, there are predictive models that can be deployed. Industrial hygiene is accessible and ready to work for your people. Collect data to make informed decisions.
