Please join us in congratulating MIT Jameel Clinic - AI & Health AI faculty lead Regina Barzilay on being one of three recipients to be honored with WebMD's 2024 Health Heroes Award! 🏆 Barzilay was recognized for her work on MIRAI, a groundbreaking AI model that predicts breast cancer risk within 5 years that is now being used on real patients in prospective trials. "Not only for MIRAI, but for many AI tools, the question is, 'How do you bring them into the health care system in a way which changes patient outcomes? It's an extremely complex process of studying how people implement it, and what is the right way to make it a standard of care." — Regina Barzilay This year's awards are focused on individuals who are leading the way in using AI to address critical health challenges, reshaping how we diagnose, treat, and prevent serious conditions. There are long-term approval and monitoring processes that exist to ensure that new medical devices and drugs remain safe, but Boston University School of Public Health's Elaine O. Nsoesie and MIT Jameel Clinic - AI & Health PI Marzyeh Ghassemi point out that clinical AI models often skirt these processes. The result? Biased AI algorithms that worsen gender, socioeconomic and racial discrimination while reducing overall trust in the healthcare system. So how can we reduce the likelihood of potential harms when it comes to AI in health? Ghassemi recently did a Q&A with Adam Zewe for MIT News about her new commentary with Nsoesie published in Nature Computational Science. 📰 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eeDX4XG6 #aiforgood #aiforhealth #aibias #aisafety #healthcareinnovation
